Hi to all,

We are looking at buying an Audi A6 or a new Mondeo. I am really liking the A6, and one of the reasons is the multitronic gearbox! However, obviously I am here, and therefore horrified and petrified at the prospect of what this could mean.

Are A6's after 57/08 reg still majorly effected by these problems? I notice almost all the problems mentioned here are on much older cars. We are looking at an 57/08 2.0 TDi, but if it is choice of manual or multitronic, we will swing to the Mondeo anyway, as like I say the multitronic is one of the main reasons for the favouritism towards the A6.

I will probably have a Warranty on it anyway as the current car has made use of it's warranty ever year.

The 57/08 multitronic do not have the problems the earlier ones had. They upgraded it to a 7 plate clutch which eradicated the judder problems the earlier ones had. The audi a6 will hold it's money better than a ford

But I read that the 7 plate clutch doesn't totally fix the problems and they still fail? Also what about the ECU failures? I realise that the Audi will hold it's value better (slightly, and running costs outweigh that) but, thats a mute point if it costs me thousands to repair a gearbox during ownership.

I realise that reading forums usually only has people who are complaining of faults, but obviously such a major c'common' fault is concerning. I suppose of the thousands of A6's out there only about 5% or so may have problems reported?

hi all my first post on this forum. Thanks to all on here i do not own a 56 plate Audi A4 Avant 2.0 multitronic. I was on the verge of purchasing one this morning, and the final test drive before i paid for it i noticed a little bumping feeling when coming to a stop. The salesman tried to tell me this was normal for the CVT of the car!!!! Being armed with your experiences i knew that this was not the case but instead possibly a fault with even a valve or the clutch not letting go properly. I got their mechanic to go for a drive and he confirmed the bumping!! Needless to say i didnt buy it and hopefully no one else will either!
The problem is i really like the car and still want one but obviously with a better chance of the gearbox surviving. I have heard the 7 speed auto is possibly better than the 6 speed? Please help or should we just buy a manual!!!

Get a quattro, then you get the reliable tiptronic.

Question: Multitronic/Automatic/Tiptronic??? In the hunt for a 2004 ish 2L Tdi130bhp auto for towing a caravan. Audi A6 Avant auto top of the list until I found this great threadsmile Some Audi Avants 1.9tdi’s are advertised as Tiptronics on pistonheads and Autotrader so how would you know what box it has got? I was surprised by TT’s statement that all 2L tdi FWD A6’s were Multitronic. If that is the case I will walk away frownand go back to the other alternative’s Mondeo 130tdci tiptronic or Passat 130 tiptronic. Any thoughts? Thanks.

If it's an A4/A6 quattro made in the past 10 years or so, it's definitely a tiptronic (conventional torque convertor auto). Anything else is FWD and Multitronic/CVT. The tiptronic is extremely reliable, the Multi/CVT has it's issues - as you see here.

I have an A4 TDI 143 on order with this box.
Will see what occurs but as I understand the issues seem sorted?

So the 1.9L FWD A6 avant's 2001-2005 I see advertised as tiptronic are all CVT/ multitronic? Pretty surprised at that. I test drove one last week and never noticed it. I thought the CVT should feel different. Quattro wont fit the bill due to fuel consumption and larger engine. Looks like the A6 avant is off the list.Mondeo and Passat tiptronic back on. I would have considered a DSG passat but they seem to have issues as well? Thanks again.

DSG's need an oil change at 40k.

I'd imagine sellers are advertising them as tiptronics due to issues with the multitronic wink

As for fuel consumption, we get low 30's from our 2.0T Q Avant on a run, so not too bad.

I believe the CVT on these is made to feel like a normal auto because it has 7 pre-prommed 'gears' so it behaves liek a normal auto.

The older ones had the 'normal' CVT action of steady revs but fluctuating speed but this was not universally liked so they added the 'gears' feature and did away with it behaving like a CVT normally does.

Well after not buying the Audi due to the fault and the garage saying it did have a fault, it was amusing to see it was still for sale on the forecourt today!!!
So if your in Cheltenham and looking for an Avant Multitronic dont go for the one from Pioneer Auto, shocking!!!!
