Tried a Polo Gti today and considering putting in the Golf Gti Tdi against it and taking delivery of a new one in March 2013. Have read a few reviews and comments and would be glad of your feedback - particularly from anyone who has one.

I hear that the DSG box is unpopular so that worries me slightly with regard to re-sale. However, it impressed me so it's a shame that it's putting people off.

Also I gather there has been some talk of it needing more oil than expected?

The other issue would seem to be should I be considering it's French rivals, or does anyone have any other suggestions. With our chosen spec it's coming up to nearly £20k which is a lot of money for a Polo ......

The Fabia VR-S is of course pretty much the same (but cheaper) than the Polo GTI.

Failing that your £20,000 will buy you a great slightly used Golf GTI.

Love the DSG in my Fabia VRS, but then I live in London so spend far too much time crawling in traffic.

Mine's not using any oil really - a small amount between services but not enough to bother topping up yet. It was an ex-demo car so being used hard early in it's life probably helped.

Personally I think the price of the GTI is bonkers next to the Fabia (especially when it's on VAT-off again) - a basic VRS hatch can be had for £13.3k on DTD, and much of the options list is the same.

My OH went for the Polo GTi after driving many many other cars, She adores it, practical, real world 40mpg, £110 tax disc and sub 7 sec 60s, the engine pulls like a truck the second you touch the loud pedal. It is however a 7/10ths car, its not very happy driving 10/10ths.

we paid 19k for ours which was spec'd to 24k with options

they need to be driven very hard or they burn oil, ours did 6lts in 6k miles, 30 mins of red line shifting cured it and its not burnt a drop in the next 12k miles

I have wondered if I should have got her to drive a lightly used golf GTi but i doubt it would have been so cheap to run, oh and i forgot she hates golfs?? women smile

DSG is not unpopular; the negative feedback is in 99% of instances unfair and ill-reasoned.

DSG/S-Tronic boxes are neither manuals nor conventional automatics and like any car you need to adapt your driving style slightly to suit. If you refuse to do this then you will not enjoy it or appreciate its strengths. People that only want manuals should only buy/drive manuals wink

Thanks for the feedback guys. Haven't decided yet so, in the interests of balance, I am going to try a 'warm' hatch today - the Suzuki Swift Sport. It has had excellent reviews and sounds like fun. It may just do the same job for a lot less money. However, I wont be trying the French rivals to this range as my husband used to sell Peugeots (amongst many other brands) and the quality was cr*p!

Swift sport is a real giggle; old school wring its neck and drive on the door handles stuff.

Swift Sport is a very underrated car IMO.

Well the Swift Sport was fun BUT it's no VW is it?!?! hehe I know we are talking a big price difference tho' so I would say that for the money it's great fun.

So we are one stage closer to making a decision but that now comes down to a low mileage nearly new Golf GTi or a brand new Polo GTi which they are offering a tidy deal on currently. scratchchin

Go for the Golf unless the deal for the Polo is exceptionally good.

The Golf GTI mk6 is a great all rounder.

Personally, I wouldnt choose the Polo/A1/Fabia with the 180PS engine, in the short-term you could get a bad or really bad one for
oil usage, see the big thread on http://uk-polos.net/

If you're a private buyer keeping for the long term, you can take out the VW extended warranty to cover the DSG for another 1 or 2 years.

For your £20,000 budget I would be looking at:

1. Octavia VRS
2. End of line MK6 GTI
3. Something with the 122PS engine

Can I ask how good the deal was?
I am thinking of chopping in my runabout and need to replae it with a 5door hatch for the missus and the Polo GTI ticks all my boxes (as would a used Golf mind you!)
