I recently bought an Audi A4 FSE(Multitronic 04 plate). Shortly after I bought it I noticed a delay when pulling away from stationary position. Engine revs but car just sits, its like its slipping or in neutral, dangerous when turning across on coming traffic!!!
I read that this is a common fault which will lead to further problems? The dealer says this is just how the box works and that there is no fault, I disagree with him, the cars dangerous as far as i'm concerned. Not sure how to prove the fault as its intermittent.
Anyone had similar gearbox faults? I would be grateful for any advice you guys on the forum could give me.

If it is a multitronic it is how they work. Put it is "S" and it will respond quickly or use the preselected ratio.

If you turn when there is oncoming traffic you might to have a look on your driving style

Many thanks for your response Jack.Yes it is multitronic. When I said turning across oncoming traffic I meant when there was a suitable gap, surely when you put your foot down the car should move? Pulling out of junctions is also a problem, and when on hills sometimes the car rolls as back as there is know drive, is this the start of the problems I read about on this forum, ie the ECU needs reolacing and later on a complete new gearbox,7 plate clutch upgrade at £££££££?
Any advice welcom folks

Do you brake with your left foot?

Sorry, but they are all like that. Slightly better 2007 on but not a great deal.

When they made me take one to milton keynes, the way I had to deal with the busy roundabouts was, put my foot flat down when the car going past was right infront of me, then I would actually take off just after the car has past.

The common faults are juddering when you pull away, a very hash shake like clutch judder (new input shaft or clutch pack mod), and random loss of drive combined with warning lights on the dash (usually ECU failure)

The rolling back is normal to, it is not like any other auto box, which would creep or hold you from going back, they all do this to sadly. Again the 2007 on ones tend to be better, but they can roll back too.

The normal delay pulling away is not the beginning of the faults, its just a characteristic. If you got if from an Audi dealer you can return it within 30days I believe, and swap for a manual.

If it actually properly looses drive, i.e you rev the engine and dont move at all for like 2 or 3 seconds (more than the usual delay), this is the sign that the ecu on its way out, and generally time to sell.

All i do is advise people to stay away from these things, auto's are horrible enough as it is, multi tronic is just the worst of the worst.

As long as it is to an Audi dealer and not some poor unsuspecting gimp in the public

Thanks for the replies guys,I think sometimes it does lose drive for more than 2seconds, no flashing lights on the dash though, maybe ECU is on way out. Unfortunately I didnt buy it from and Audi dealer and the dealer I did buy from is just saying it is how the CVT box works.
I think it is very dangerous, they shouldnt design cars where you have to guess whats going to happen when you put your foot down!!!!! Wouldnt be surprised if this has caused accidents somewhere along the way.
I'm afraid I will have to bite the bullet and get rid of the car, only had it 3months and love everything about it, apart from the box!!
Gona lose money on it but my save me aggro and money in the long run.

Had my audi A4 2.5TDI multironic for 2years. Car has been superb throughout. I took over some one recently and lost all gears. All gear lights illuminated and car lost all drive. Audi dealership have recomended a new gearbox before even trying to replace the ecu, at a cost of £4000. Will never buy a multironic again unless i win the lottery!I have now left the car with an automatic gearbox specialist who will diagnose the fault properly and tell me if audi are correct. i will find out mon and keep you all posted. Surley audi should take responsability for designing such a poor gear box!?

Car manufacurers (any not just Audi) rairly take any interest in any vehicles outside of waranty. If they are low milage and 5 years old or less, they may make a contribution (with strict conditions, such as, main dealer service history) but beyond that they have no interest. I'm am very outspoken about how rubish that box is, and always advising people not to get one, and if they have ged rid of it quick.

From your description, your fault could well be an ECU, but if the main dealer says it need a gearbox, they probably drained a litle oil for insepection, found it was full of metal fragments, and that means a new box.

See this thread for more Multi tronic info.

Thanks for advice, audi will be sold asap! found a superb garage in notts called Oakdene. They did a good inspection of the gear box and found the problem was the gear box pump. Still expensive but did the trick. Now runs as it did but will still be sold straight away. Audi will loose out in the long run as they are gaining a bad rep on what should be a prestige motor.

I used Oakdene in the past, very very good auto transmission specialist.
They told me they do lots of work for main dealers.
