Engine management light came on for the first time over the weekend and again whenever the car's been run since - 51 Leon Cupra (180). The light's constant not flashing.

There are no audible or performance symptoms- car seems to be running as normal. Is it likely to be something damaging that means we should stop using it until it's been looked at, or can it be used with caution over a few miles for the next few days?

Lots of relatively minor faults on 20Vs can throw that light on...

If it's running and boosting fine with fuel economy normal could well be a lambda? Won't do any harm if the engine is running fine, could damage the cat if it's not. A number of 1.8T problems are gradual and don't flag an engine light so you don't always feel the drop in performance.

Get yourself a cable from ebay and the free rosstec software. It will scan your car for faults so at least you will know whats up. Works a treat when my mum's Skoda Octy 4x4 starting misfiring. I thought it would be a coil pack but it flashed up coolant temp sensor as well as intermittant coil packs. Sorted her slowly dropping mpg without costing 80 quid for a diagnostic check!

also used the same cable on my 1999 passat, 2000 golf and last of the mk4 golfs on a 2004 plate all for about a tenner!

Fuel economy not great but no change there smile Sometimes a strong fuel smell on idle at a standstill but again that's ongoing for a while. Currently trying to source cable as suggested by spats.

Thanks chaps

thats what was making the 1.8T 4x4 Octy run a bit rich. I could smell the unburnt fuel at idle.

I have the full licensed updated VCDS if you're ever down near Exeter. The Ebay cables are known to be pretty flaky and work off a hacked version of vagcom anyway.

Diagnostics returned fault code P0171, system too lean.

Car's booked in to JKM (VAG specialist in Portsmouth) on Wednesday and by a stroke of good fortune I've managed to blag a new RS5 to hack about in til then so I don't have to keep using the Cupra biggrin
