high mileage 3.0tdi A5s
Discussion
They're pretty solid generally, I seem to remember the 3.0tdi can be prone to the swirl flaps playing up, but apart from that at 120k you'll be more likely fixing suspension parts (replacing bushes etc) than engines. Unless its been ragged it should be good for 200k without any major work.
Yes, forget about resale but an excellent value car if you're planning to whack another 100 on it.
The 240 3.0 TDIs don't so far seem to have the same manifold flap motor problem the earlier cars do, on the older cars (A6, Q7 etc) it can be fixed for £250 a side and doesn't need a new manifold.
Expect a chippy nose (all A5s suffer from this, it's just cosmetic), a scuffed driver's seat (easily fixed, Gliptone) and a worn MMI dial (£40). Mechanically they're very tough, they don't even punish their dampers/bushes. Sensitive to alignment, particularly with larger wheels so look for undue wear on inside edges and bank on a proper 4 wheel setup every couple of years. Clutches are good even with a map/miles. Make sure everything MMI works and be triple check this on any cars with aftermarket privacy film. The amplifier is under the NSR window and **any** moisture can kill it very quickly. If the window is misted before the film is applied and this runs onto the amp you can kiss it goodbye.
Also surprisingly competent when hustled, not a sports car but very reassuring and feels 'on side' at speed/cross country.

Sorry for the thread hi-jack but where can I get a new MMI dial? Tried at my local dealer on Sat to be told that its not available as a single item but that I would need to buy the whole control panel that surrounds the gear stick at more than £500 I think it was. Checked on ebay and there's just the whole control panels on there as well for multi-hundreds of pounds.
Problem with the MMI knob in my A5 is that it sits too far down - someones obviously been putting far too much pressure on it - or its been thumped.
Clearly the parts guy you spoke to didn't even bother checking,
