Hi All,
I have an Audi A4 Avant 2009 with the semi-problematic gearbox. It’s a low-ish mileage car (105,000 miles) Full service history, 70% main dealer and 30% independent. The gearbox was last service at 78,611 miles (25th March 2019) by main dealer with receipt. So I have been surprised to see the ‘Gearbox Mal-function’ *you can continue driving* message on the display when I start the car and the amber ! in a sun style circle. I have read that the you can have a faulty TCM or faulty TCM sensors. I don’t appear at the minute to have any other issues/signs. Changes gearbox smoothly, no jerking, goes in reserve all ok. The only thing I could say is it does appear to have a longer rev changing time, when pulling away in first gearbox, but I’m comparing this to other autos I’ve owned. Otherwise I can’t see/feel any difference since the light came on. I have it booked in with a Audi/German service specialist on 13th March to do a scan/diagnostic check to try and pinpoint the fault. £85 for the pleasure of finding this out, hence thinking I’ll ask on here if anyone has any suggestions/advice.

They don’t call it multi-chronic for nothing hehe although the newer ones aren’t quite as bad. If you do a search in the Audi section on here there’s a large thread somewhere back in the ether.

Those later ones are OK generally, and yours sounds like a TCU issue. There are several companies that refurbish these.
