I'm surprised you didn't get flamed earlier considering the Gallardo vs R8 thread etc etc. Mate has one, quite good, but give it 6 months and it'll be the modern day TT equivalent.

I'm in a similar position as undecided as to what car to jump into next as there are many new options in this price bracket i.e Gallardo/360/R8/V8 Vantage/Granturismo/etc.

Ive got one and absolutely love it... I use it as my daily driver so to speak and it is one (if not) the best car I have ever had. Ive used it on the track as well and have to say that it is simply amazing there too. Its probably one of the easiest cars to drive fast and is in a completely different zone to my cs which is a handful in anything but the dry! But then they are two very different cars!

Can't beleive how much attention it gets to be honest... It does drink a lot being a 4.2 (and I also live in the city so only use it really for city driving and the odd run outs) I guess I get about 200 miles to the tank maybe less depending on how its driven. Servicing - Havent needed one yet but have been told to expect £1k ish for the service depending on if anything needs doing. Its only drunk a litre of oil in 3k miles so nothing to bad there. I would go for the manual over the r-tronic as that can be fairly jerky. Clutch is very easy - light and works nicely with the metal gate. Its massively quick... But at the same time can be driven like an A4 if you want to blend in. Easy to park and visibility is very good all round to be honest. I would definately recommend it - For me it does feel special driving it and sometimes I prefer to drive it if you dont want the whole 'experience' that goes with taking the ferrari out - but then I guess that is what some people are after in a car of this value? (to feel like an experience).

For me its perfect as a second car and I would seriosuly think twice about getting rid of it 1) Because I do actually love it and 2) It does everything that I needed it for.

If you want any specific questions answered etc just pm me...

Thats the thing I dislike about them. Its not very supercar-ish!

Friend has a manual, flawless cars, averages 15mpg, took 1 litre of oil just recently after 3k miles. He owned a Gallardo E-Gear before and although i preferred the look/feel and precense of the Gallardo - The R8 is the better all rounder and easier to drive quickly in my opinion. The build quality is flawless, no creeks or vibrations and would be the better everyday car. Most will be still be under Audis water tight warranty and i have not heard of any clutch issues similar to what the Gallardo had at the begining.

Not sure whats happening with the used prices at the moment but i would defo not buy one new.

P.S. If i had £70k and had to choose between a 05 Gallardo and a 08 R8 then i would still pick the Gallardo. Heart always rules the Head.

Come on? LP560 and the California according to all motoring publications are easy/easier to drive - the more modern supercars are all falling into line and the R8 has led the way in my opinion. I remember Tiff on Fifth Gear reviewing the Gallardo against the 360 and he said the exact same thing about the Gallardo being too easy to drive.

The days of sweating buckets trying to navigate a Diablo or Ferrari F40 through your local town centre or favourite road are over.

I know, and I think thats a shame in some ways. Ok, so maybe the likes of the Diablo or F40 are a bit too far the other way. But when I drive my 355 I like the fact that it feels bare inside, just focussed purely on driving. Although the steering is a little bit too overly assisted in the 355, but too heavy in a 348.

I had a ride in a Gallardo recently, and it was lovely, but not in a supercar sense. All that in built sat nav and big centre console with lots of buttons spoilt the effect and in some way distracted from the occaision of being in a Lamborghini. I suppose the R8 would get away with it though, because its an Audi.

Anyway, I'll shut up now before I get accused of thread high-jacking and upset anyone.

The R8 has more in common with the cars on here than on the Audi/VW forum. Personally I wouldn't waste my time on the Audi/VW forum. Alternatively try www.r8talk.com.

No problem... Theres a lot of people out there that knock them and everyone has their own reasons for that and if im really honest I was one of the people that said a year or so ago - I wont pay 90k for an Audi... But at the current prices and after an extended test drive in one I couldnt hand the cash over fast enough. Ive also had an RS4 which I think is why I like the R8 a lot - there are so many synergies between the two. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion but as I said before it needed to fit a specific role for me which was to be a fast, special, good looking car that could be driven every day and not break down / break your back / hearing etc (I have the CS for that) and it does it perfectly... The mrs loves it also which is a bonus ;-)

It is easy to drive fast but as has been said before - a lot of the newer 'supercars' - 430,lp560,997 turbo etc are also incredibly easy to drive fast. If you want to have a good blast though - take it to the track and turn off the esp completely... now that is good fun - especially in the soaking rain!

...and that's why you drive a Porsche ...and why I DON'T drive a Porsche. biglaugh

No criticism of your choice - that's clearly what's for you but for me I can't think of anything more tediously, uninspiringly dull.

If I wanted a car that drove like a Deutsche-Wagen I'd get one and it's precisely why I don't!

It's certainly not what I want from my supercar **experience** Otherwise, if it's all about practicality and ease of driving fast, why aren't we all in Evos or GTR35s? They'd leave us for dead and then go and do the family shop at Tesco!

Even after months of ownership and a couple of thousand miles, I still spend the first 20 minutes nervous as hell and excited EVERY TIME I get in my Diablo. Now THAT'S an experience.

If ALL supercars really do go down the dull avenue (god forbid) then I will be off back to the 'little leagues' and get an Exige or Atom or something. If the Italian big boys do keep going down this route (which seems likely) then I guess I will have to pin my future hopes on the new Esprit to deliver the goods?

(*penny drops* - ...or of course just KEEP what I have! LOL) hehe

Ah yes, chased a friend home from Silverstone via the back roads one dark and rainy night last year - me in my GT3, him in a GT2. Safely back in his local after an hours flat out (given the roads and conditions) driving we looked at each other, raised our glasses and both voiced the same thought - "God, that was dull mate!". wink

TBH 1k for a service seems steep? Is it a first service or second?
The engine isnt hard to get access to should need nothing more than maybe oil and filter change so maybe 300 quid.

Let us know.
