I've noticed over the past six months a slight wisp of blue on starting my A4 up. Only lasting for a couple of moments and barely visible. I've watched the dipstick and it does drop but I've measured it at about two litres in around 6000 miles. For info it's the 30v ACK engine in a '98 A4Q, decent history, and 103k on the clock.

This morning I fired it up and rather than the usual 15-20 sec of idling while I get the belt on and fiddle with the radio, I had to shift it 20 feet up the road as soon as I got in. This brought a much bigger burp of oily smelling smoke.

I had originally put the wisps down to weeping valve seals, which let drips through while shut down and warm, pooling oil in the exhaust ports which burnt out on startup. Mostly because this was what happened to an old 318i I had.

The bigger burp due to a bit more throttle when very cold concerns me that it could be related to rings and a bit of blowby or suck through. However on a related note, while doing some work on lambda sensors a while back I saw a lot of oil and muck in the throttle body, from the breather hoses, so could it be this?

Has anyone else had experience of the ACK engine, or this problem? Or any advice before I start investigating further?

My next steps are a compression test, a good sluice out of the breathers and potentially converting to an open circuit breather.

I'll check it out, much obliged!

Although it didn't blow the slightest wisp today. So that's good. Unless it's just totally empty of oil...
