DSG reliability
Discussion
Hi. My father is contemplating a new golf with DSG but has read some horror stories about DSG reliability. Is this Internet myth?
I haven't heard anything but haven't been in the market for one. Obviously be under warrant first three years but this likely to be dads last car so doesn't want big bills after warranty period

I believe there were problems on early '05/'06 cars from what I've researched. They require a DSG oil & filter change every 40k miles, a must if you were looking at a 2nd hand one.I haven't heard anything but haven't been in the market for one. Personally I dont believe you'll have a problem on a new one, hope that helps.

It seems that the 6-speed DSG box in the more powerful cars is better than the 7-speed box in the lower-powered cars. My 2010 1.4 122bhp Golf had to have a new clutch and mechatronic unit at 37,000 miles. Luckily it was still under warranty (though it was off the road for 6 weeks waiting for parts from Germany). Google "VW mechatronic problems".

Is he more concerned about MPG. I just picked up an A3 2.0TDI last Wednesday with DSG and I'm averaging 26mpg
thats not going to be the dsg's fault , unless its jammed in 2nd My R32 is on an 06 plate and 51k miles. The DSG box is utterly perfect. Dont know if they've sorted the slight delay between coming off the break pedal and drive - that would be my only complaint about it.
Saying that though mine will probably go bang tomorrow lol
Was serviced 2 years ago on 37k but will have it done at the next service just incase.

I have a Skoda Octavia vRS DSG with the 170hp version of that engine and over 3,500 miles it has averaged 47mpg (calculated NOT from dash readout). There is something wrong with your car, or the driver :-)Glosphil said:

I'm going to discuss this with Audi tomorrow. I managed 44mpg today (per the computer though) felt I was doing well and then the oil light came on. Not impressed so far. morgrp said:
Is it brand new?
Nope 57 plate so the PD engine with 74k on it. It's the 170. Not sure what the problem is but my previous A3 which I'd owned from new never used oil once and got better economy even though it was a petrol doing around 4-5000rpm on the motorway it's whole life.
Bit annoyed
There are specialists now that can rebuild and repair broken boxes so you don't need to pay the VW tax on a new unit if it goes wrong.
Personally I'm on my second dsg car first did 60k with no faults, second is on 50k and has had the mechatronic seal replaced under warranty due to an oil leak. This car is quite highly mapped so am half expecting issues.

On my 3rd DSG box now. First two were 6 speed wet clutch versions and had zero problems over 60K odd miles. 3rd one is a 7 speed dry clutch version and the clutch pack was changed under warranty to cure a juddering issue. Read into that what you will but I believe that can be a common issue on these versions.
