Has anybody had problems with the plastic cylinder head inlet manifold mal-functioning? My Audi A8 is only 4 years old - a piece of this mechanism has broken off and entered the engine.

The result? Audi say I need a complete rebuild of the cylinder head which has been costed at £12,000! However, they actually recommended an entirely new engine at a cost of £20,000+.

Audi accept no responsibility saying the vehicle has done 80,000 miles and falls outside the warranty. Yet this same vehicle needed a new gear box at 30,000 miles (which was carried out under warranty).

Has anyone else experienced, or hear of, a similar problem? How did Audi respond? Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks for all your contributions - most helpful.

I mentioned the gear box issue, not because I thought it was related to the current problem, but to indicate that perhaps I have a rogue A8. A new gear box at 30,000 miles and a new engine at 80,000 miles cannot be considered normal! Or am I just unlucky?

What I'm really trying to find out is this. Audi state that this phenomenon has never occurred anywhere before in all of their history of Audi A8s, where the inlet manifold flap linkage has broken and entered the engine, yet, in the rebuild cost, they are insisting that I replace the undamaged nearside inlet manifold flap linkage also, otherwise they won't warranty any of the repair. Now that is just not logical to me unless there is a recognised problem with that part.

So I was trying to find out if anyone else has experienced this same problem with an Audi A8.

Thanks.
