Tell me about the mk1 Audi S3 please.

I'm looking for a fast, interesting, well-put-together, reliable hatch (but not necessarily hatch) for a budget of about 5-6K.

It will be a second car, so needs to be semi-practical and properly-car-y to put people and things in.

Ideally it will be quick, or even better feel quick.

I don't fancy Impreza or suchlike as I'll rarely drive it anything like as fast as I think I would need to for that to be fun.

S3 makes me think we might end up being friends.

I'm getting nowhere.

At least I've managed to have a shave.

Why not a minty E36 M3 in restrained colours and sensible interior.

Can be pootled about in, and yet can rip its top off and wave its breasts in the face of whatever you're 'avin a go at in a flash.

Economical, if you like that sort of thing.

Also steers from the correct end. Unfortunatly no wipers in the side windows though, sadly.
because he's not a chav?
Am I rilly rilly wrong to think that looks nice then?

Whilst mines not an M3, look at my profile to see how they should look.

Obviously, driven like larry layback holding the top of the steering wheel with my right hand. Innit.
If I got one, would I have to strip to the waist to drive it?

I wouldn't like that, on account of my puffy nips draw unwanted attention.

ask him what car he drove that's lead him to this thread.
I like the idea that you have to be driven to making a thread on here.

Its like we do it just for the love of it.

That or you had a paradigm.
It's like that, except instead of "the love of it" I do it for money.

I get 0.01p per post.

I'm homing in on a clear profit of thirty pence - tax free!

Well I love mine.

Bad points are:

- Sounds like a hairdryer
- Ride a little on the harsh side
- Audi dealers are generally rubbish and expensive
- Not a lot of steering feel

Good points are:

- Understated good looks
- Feels special, not just another car
- Relatively economical for the power
- Easy to modify
- Huge grip and traction
- Brisk (when remapped)
- Excellent build quality
- Practical

Mine is reluctantly for sale due to impending parenthood.
Why, what are you having?

Quints?

We've got little Bluebus number 2 due in two weeks, and our family car will remain a Honda Civic.

I spent enough time carting fresh air about in the backs of Mondeo and A6 estates just because I believed I needed the room.

I didn't.

I agree. Good car but bit too much of an all rounder for your purposes?

Also correct.

The Civic has a bigger boot than the S3. Is it a 5 door too?

I agree you don't need a massive car, but I was pretty sure I'd need something bigger than the S3 and with back doors too.
You might be right.

It's the new shape Civic with the "hidden" rear doors, and the boot is utterly cavernous - I'm amazed how much will go in there.

due to the torsion bean rear suspension setup rather than an independant setup.
Handling: compromised.

Space for baby junk: ample.

perfecto for you them i am assuming, good stuff.

luckily my little 1 year old doesnt require too much baby junk, just a (biggish) bag which will go pretty much anywhere, i could easily fit it in an s3 without even using the boot.
In fairness, Mrs Bluebus predominantly drives the Civic.

I want something else that'll be a proper car, only funner.

Your lines are the same as my lines.

I guess I'll just have to go and start trying them all.

well i am sure it will be fun trying them, any from the list you would dismiss straight away?

the more you can whittle it down the easier your decision will be.
I had a DC2 before and rue the day I ever got rid of it.

Mondeo might be too big - I had one before and it was a right old barge (not what I'm after now).

Scooby - I've driven a few and for the sort of road-speed driving I do, I call dull.

Mrs Bluebus likes the Civic Type R.

I hadn't really thought about the Leon, but might be interesting.

The S3 idea arose because I've had a couple of Audis (including a 1.8T sport quattro A4) and liked them.

Not sure why you call the impreza 'dull' yet would like a quattro Audi? When you say for the speeds you do what does that mean? Around town, motorway cruising what?
I mean that the Impreza is too competent for everyday driving IMO. Won't get to show its flair or excitement until breaching the levels of commitment I would achieve.

S3 might be just as dull, but seems as though it might be that little bit less crushingly superb and could offer up some thrills at lower levels.

However, I dunno.

That's why I've done this thread, see.
