Sorry guys...

Anyway, picked it up yesterday at 3pm to go 100 yards and find the horn doesn't work. I reckoned it would be a fuse, took it back to the dealer and they said it's not got a fuse for the horn and that they can't check any further as their VAS computer is down...not a brilliant start to be honest.

Went to fuel it - £48 something for a full tank (currently getting 22MPG with town and "look at my new car" driving.

The interior is on a totally different level to my previous car (Suzuki Swift Sport) and on a different level to most cars I have driven in my opinion. Excellent finishes to the car and great little details all over. When you put it in reverse the rear wiper clears once. The LED lights adjust depending on the light outside. All things I expect are usual in VAG cars but they are definitely not usual in a Suzuki.
Exterior is well designed with great sharp lines through out the car. Wheels in the typical GTI monza style. Love the front, looks aggressive yet not too shouty.
Power is delivered so smoothly, you'd be hard pushed to realise you are doing 100MPH without looking at the speedo. Yes, it is true in a sense that the steering is not as involved as you get in the likes of a Fiesta but I reckon that is down to the comfort levels and the ride smoothness. Something I am sure I will get used to in no time. The DSG box is also out of this world. Makes town driving so much easier. Not used 'S' mode as much as I thought I would but I don't think you'd miss it if it was not there - perhaps I have this opinion because I've not used it. The car feels much more expensive than it actually is. I know £18'275 is a big price tag for a Polo but honestly, you'd think it would be more!

So far, other than the horn (not down to the car), I have no complaints. Heading on a long run tonight so I will have a better idea on fuel consumption later on. Waited 6 months for the car with several delays in build dates and nearing the end of this time I was getting rather pissed but I can say it was well worth the wait!

As I have been running around in the car for most of the 24 hours I have had it, it's looking rather dirty. Giving it a wash this Sunday and will be HD'ing it then so will get photos up then! In the meantime here are some snaps when it was getting PDI'd

So far, so awesome.

I disregard my last comment about sport mode! As soon as you think about touching the throttle the car downshifts - its mega fast!

Fuel consumption is also very good. You can easily achieve 40mpg on a run over 10 miles. Over a 30 mile run I got 51.4mpg (really testing it). But yeah, 40 is easy to get with speeds of 60-70mph as long as you don't have the urge to bury your right foot too often.

Get's plenty of attention wherever you go. Passers by will comment, friends will lust!

One of my mates has a Vauxhall Corsa VXR Racing and, as if by magic, we met on the road going to Inverness 2 Sundays ago. Although I was down 15BHP, he was not pulling away on the straights. I was all over him in the corners and when I passed he was a mere red dot in my rear view mirror!

The car is everything I expected - and more!! If you are in the market for a small hot hatch I'd definitely check this out (if you can be bothered waiting 5-7 months tongue out)

Forgot to add my very biased view. Skoda is a disgusting looking car, totally revolting. Seat is far, far to shouty. VW is by far the best laugh

I also thought about a black GTI after seeing a friends black 5dr Golf GTI, however, I think the Polo would look stupid in said colour as it'd be too small!

Yes, fuel economy has improved greatly. Like I said, you can easily achieve 40mpg on a run over 10 miles with speeds of 60-70mph

True, you will save £3000 on the Fabia but, let's face it, it's not the same

Any word on the car yet Huw? I am going back to my old thread to try & ignite some inspiration!! I was asked to write a mini-review type article for VW Driver Magazine (hope I can mention this Neil??).
I never expected it to be this difficult - I was good at English in school too!! frown

Flash Red,
Bi-Xenons,

The thing is with the Polo, I reckon it'd give most 'average' drivers in most hot hatches a decent run for it's money in regards to acceleration due to human error in a manual. However, though the handling is not exactly diabolical, I am sure the likes of a Focus ST or Clio RS would be all over it like stink on a pig in the corners!

peeves with the touch screen stereo do you still have the mdi socket does this take a usb memory stick ?

what do you think of the sound it produces ?

Edited by daydotz on Friday 17th December 16:40
In the glove box you have an MDI output which I use my iPhone on. Without checking the car I can't remember if this is through a USB - I don't think it is though? The stereo also takes an SD car and there is an AUX output too.
I think you could buy a lead that would allow you to connect a memory stick.

Sound is decent enough though I am no big fan of 'blasting out my beats'.lol.

You thinking of getting one?

Arrogant pricks. Never happened to me as I have only had two cars but I have hear the stories of dealerships doing that...their loss.

I'd try for a test in the Polo and if they say no, go and buy the Skoda/Seat - just to prove a point!
That, or go to your next nearest dealer and test drive the Polo there - be a shame to miss out on a car like this - you'd never look back!;)

If I was sensible for the full tank I'd push around 375-400 miles.

Though that never really happens when your 18, does it?lol

I had seen a sort of concept on AE last November (I think) and since then I was hooked. Only having had the Suzuki for around 6 months I got fairly fed up of it. All the rattles, poor ride and poor quality really caught up with me and the novelty of having a half sporty first car wore off.
So, by September/October I was desperate for a new car. Working for Ford I had pondered a Focus ST but the insurance was around £7000. I then thought of a Clio 197 but having seen the 'suspected' Polo GTI and reading it would be in the UK by summer 2010 I was keen to get an order in. I told my dealer that I wanted the vehicle so as soon as they could, order one.
As everyone knows, VW lead times are not the best so I got really fed up waiting and was seriously close to buying an Clio RS 'Gordini'. I went off the idea on hearing the car had a build date (which came and went). I then thought of a Golf GTI but the news came my car was "in transit" and here we are.
So, a fair few ideas but I certainly don't regret the Polo in any way.

I'd say I am averaging 250-350 miles depending on how well work had gone that week. laugh

Ive had the same discussion around fabia's v polo's. £3k difference is obviously a fair whack but as said the difference between the two is considerable.

At one point I owned a 97 polo and an 03 Fabia at the same time. The Polo despite its age difference was far superior inside. My parents at that time also had an 03 Polo too and again much the same, far better than the Fabia.

This time round I think looks come into it too. Personally I find the current Fabia very bland and couldnt see myself in it. However i do like the Polo.

Anyone compared the Polo to the ibiza or A1 yet? Again apparently the "same car" (chassis).
I don't think anyone on here has the Seat. For me it looks a bit too shouty. There was a comparison test done on AE website - the Polo came out on top...obviously! tongue out

It depends on how long I am stopped for - anything up to, say, 15 seconds I use the foot brake. Any time longer I put it in park.
No, a quick getaway is not the easiest. I stop fully before putting it in opposite drive. A pain when doing manoeuvres!

I had a fairly terrible drive when the snow hit hard the first time round. From Hawick - Edinburgh - Fort William. Took me 2 hours from Hawick to Edinburgh which is normally a 45-60 minute drive depending on traffic. Then, from Edinburgh to Fort William it took me 10 hours!!!!
I thought the car would be a nightmare with DSG. I was constantly using the paddles to keep the gear as low as possible and had the ESP turned off for the majority of the drive. Getting up hills I was constantly turning the steering left-right-left to gain traction.
So, bearing in mind this was 3-5 inches of snow on the road, it will be like any other small hatchback only with the added problem of auto. It copes - just.

Have to say, that drive was good experience but I am st scared of driving in snow now.

Agree that a £20'000 Polo is a little OTT, however, it seems very few people are paying that for theirs. Also, take into consideration the value in 3 years... I bet it'd surprise you

I'd reckon you'd get maybe £10-11K in 3 years/30'000. I suppose I am supporting this theory with how well Golf GTI's have held there value but perhaps this is a tad unfair??
Last November when a guy who work with us swapped his 05 Golf GTI with the new MK6, we retailed the vehicle for £12995 IIRC. This was completely bare - no options.

In regards to the wheels, I say its heritage now. They are fantastic, always liked them. One of the tell-tale signs of a GTI. I like that. Same way you can always tell an Audi RS model from the rest. I love the things that manufacturers continue throughout all their range.

Wee update...

I hit a huge fk off pothole last weekend and the result was a big golf ball on the N/S/F tyre. Was always my intention to swap out all 4 tyres for some Michelins. Didn't think it'd come this early though. Anyway, order 4 and they were put on at work today. Though it's a pretty quiet car as it is, the new tyres make a huge difference. The roads up my way are a nightmare so can't comment much on fast driving but I have high expectations.

I didn't spec the DAB, don't see it being much of a problem in the next 5-6 years, look at how many older cars are still on the road. It's kind of like bluetooth, still not a standard fit (as we all know) on even the range toppers!!

I use BP Ultimate on it, had to use 95 a few times as 98 seems to be having a supply problem up my way - constantly 'out of order' at the local stations.

Just a by the way thing, I have two rear tyres off mine if anyone wants. Still 7mm left on them?
