Its neat but have you seen how it twists the bonnet when its in the open position.

It makes me cringe.

There's no evidence of any problem with that.

No offence meant RichB

And without wishing to exercerbate things further I have a question about these side support bonnet stays;

Doesn't it strike you as odd that TVR should have gone to such lengths to get a centrally mounted bonnet stay - and made a pigs ear of it I might say - when it would have been so much easier to have it side mounted using something pinched from a parts bin.

Can't see pictures out here in Kazakhstan, I think the server is blocking them so I will catch up on my return on Friday.

There was a fair old e-mail thread on previous forums about the stay supporting the bonnet on the side and the conclusion was that although it twists the bonnet it does no harm.

My preference is however to still support at the centre and consider adding the stay-hole to the central cross-member but I am open to persuasion on that. I must say, it does seem a neat solution to clip the stay to the central cross member but we are back to side supported bonnet and probably stay hole being in original position.

Any other eureka moments?

None taken, I didn't design it, Steve Heath did wink I just use it and as I say it's fine. To answer your question, no, it doesn't surprise me that TVR made a hash-up of the original prop after all It doesn't contribute to the power, speed or noise of the car so I guess no one was that interested.

Anyway, I only came on the thread to answer the OP's questions so I'll leave you all to debate it; I'm happy with mine. smile

At The Growl, Paul at Leven was talking about producing a new aftermarket bonnet stay. He was having a close look at the (now unavailable) SH one with a view to what he could do to improve on the design.

I will contact him. That would save me having to get them manufactured. It sounds like he is doing exactly what I want to do - thanks for the info

I have spoken to Leven. They are developing something but are unable to give me details or a price. They suggested I call in a couple of weeks. In the meanwhile I will continue my own route and see where we end up.

I have a telescopic stay on my griff, it uses the same mounting points. Not cheap though!

If Leven make one it certainly won't be priced the same as a Steve Heath one. Maybe it's just me, but I feel that Leven gear is double the price I would expect. I do know the reputation for quality too.

To be honest, modifying the original stay to make is sturdier, not touch the underside of the bonnet in the centre of the roller bar and fix to a central point in the engine bay when the bonnet is open isn't a difficult task - especially not on a pre-cat.

On mine the rod between the 2 rollers was damaged (i think it was fitted incorrectly and bent a bit previous in life) and I removed it when fitting the SH bonnet stay and just bolted through to the rollers. It does droop a bit, but not been a problem for years. The SH stay is a lot cooler to handle that the original.

I think a cool solution would be gas struts added to the hinges, and I suppose this will allow for much higher opening of the bonnet as well.

I don't think a gas strut would work because of the double action of closing the lid i.e. down, which would compress the strut and then forwards which would do what? de compress it?

Back in Blighty this afternoon, had a look at photos and agree it looks a neat solution.

I will have a play around with my Griff that I am going to rebuild to see if I can come up with a solution that does the job but also comes within a reasonable budget. I think the Steve Heath stay was about 30 quid at the time but I doubt I'll be able to do it for that but let's not be too pessimistic at this stage.

I still favour propping the bonnet at the centre, particularly as the current one seems to work in terms of length.

I agree with the comment on gas struts, I can't quite see how that will work

Hi David, eventually I swapped yours for one of Steve's because the mechanics who serviced the car would remove the bonnet during service then lose the little washer and the strut would be laying inside the bonnet separated in two halves. It just needed a tweak to stop it pulling apart in the that respect - but then one couldn't completely remove the bonnet? Still got it though. smile

Have you got a photo Dave? If it worked for you then it must be worth a punt

Daren, great idea, where did you buy the brush, B&Q Toolstation or the local skip? Do you fold it away in the car or just keep it on the transmission tunnel?

I guess the best thing about it is you can always cut it up and use it in the wood burner!
