I would personally expect both manifolds to go at similar times unless one was faulty. They are both subject to pretty much the same stresses and temp changes. Just my opinion though and anyone with more experience is welcome to correct me.

Verymuch so Ian. They are both made from the same material etc and are subjected to the same conditions. They can need replacing at roughly the same time but 2000 miles apart is not unexpected nor would 5000 miles. the same applies to brake pads, tyres etc. If they are not wearing out at roughly the same rate then you might suspect something is wrong

Its also quite normal to be replacing these pre-cat manifolds now, demand is increasing, not supprising as the originals will now be over 10 years old.
BTW Mr Gamekeeper i wasn't arguing with you about types of pre-cat manifold as we posted at around the same time i hadn't seen your post, I was refering to whats avaiable now.

Going back to 'why do the manifolds fail?' - when I had new s/s manifolds fitted at JP exhausts, they said part of the reason the TVR ones always crack is because the factory jig all the precat manifolds were made on was 'on the piss', stressing the manifolds slightly. Heat and time causes weaknesses to form - the s/steel ones are made 'properly' and should last forever. I hope.

Forever is a long time...but how often do you hear about "modern" cars, even high performance ones digesting parts almost inexplicably...IMHO it must be poor design, manufacturing or materials to blame?

Sorry to sound a bit tetchy but my Griff 500 has just developed the tinkling sound down the exhaust when pressing-on...off to Offord next week so hopefully we can identify the problem.

My guess is the exhaust manifolds studs need tightening...Offord are also going to check that the engine is not pinking...they suggested I try using OPTIMAX and I told them that I was already using it and they almost sounded relieved!

Hopefully nothing that eats up too much of Mrs Toffer's holiday fund!

PS This is not an advert for Offord...thet ARE decent people though!

TVR manifolds failed mainly because they were mild steel, 10 yrs isn't bad. they were always manufactured "on the piss" which doesn't help, the o/side manifold was the offending one.
JP manifolds have been developed over the last 2 years and are now better than ever , i gave them an engine to use as a Jig just to be sure that they line up.

The SAGA Continues....

So, I need a new mild steel exhaust manifold o/s. Apparently, the new n/s one is mild steel, which means I cannot have a stainless steel one, unless I cahnge them both to s/s.

However, TVR have announced they are not manafacturing anymore mild steel manifold :-(

Does anyone know of any garage that might have one???
