is it the ice detctor? It lies loose, in the nearside wing, at the end of a run of wires... hope that's what it is....

... as I recall someone posting that when the sensor fails, it fails 'open' so the reading is always ice! And that a quick fix to stop the dash bulb lighting is to snip the buggered sensor off and join the wires. So... scissors out...snip snip snip...

And guess what? Yup that's right, the cooling fans (500) are now constantly on, as is the ice detector light as ever.

And ideas ? And can I order a new one of these avoiding a dealer ?

Regards
Ed

For the cooling fans to be on you must have bypassed the otter switch. The wiring for the fans and the ice sensor are completely different. The ice sensors do generally fail in open circuit and are easy to replace (mine was less than 3 quid for the sensor).

So, just to get my head round this one, when you switch on the ignition the fans come on even without starting the engine, is that right?

Another thought is that the original alarms on Griffs were always in and around the left front wheel arch. The klaxxon is down there and usually fills up with water and fails. Often people take them out and replace them with a decent one leaving the wiring in place. When I first read your post that's what I thought you'd found.

I got my replacement sensor from Dave Batty. It's an easy job. The sensor sits almost right behind the nearside indicator in front of the wheel arch. See page 127 of Steve's book for details

Ed, sorry, this post hops about a bit. I hope it helps.

If you fancy a run out tomorrow and the weather is fine, come to Harpenden. We've a club meeting there between 12.30 and mid afternoon. there'll be plenty of officianados only too willing to roll up their sleeves with you.

Friend had a Mitsubishi Galant. The headlamp washer pump was going on and off and random intervals. He thought it was becasue the bottle was empty. Not stopping to think that this was plainly bollox, I poured some water in. It promptly switched on and pissed it straight up into my face...

As it was noisy, getting late and he was parked outside (housing estate, sleeping babies etc) we decided it had to be stopped.

Couldn't pull leads off - groped around by torchlight - found some wires we thought were the ones - cut them - pump still going. Ooops!

Thanks AF but was away from PC for last 36 hrs (phew!). Pretty miserable weather though - have just suffered a wet round of golf. Tired, cold and damp.

Anyway - yes, since I snipped (what I assume is) the ice sensor off, the fans come one before engine ignition, and stay on until key taken out.

Now using technology to the full, here's a snap of the little fella ...

Does this look like the one? As you can see it's well and truly snipped off. If you cope with rolling up your sleeves and having a quick rummage around the nearside arch, there's a pint in it... which I'll send via email, somehow... If it is the sensor then Batty will get a call tomorrow. IF not, then, erm, I'd better put it back. Car ran fine BTW, just a little cold at cruising speed. I can only assume its NOT a coincidence that this has happend after me & scissors got busy.

Cheers allRegards

Ive got one of those in my inner wing, it is not connected to anything. I thought the ice detector was dangling in the mouth.Over cooling, my favourate subject, you can not run cold unless your water stat is wrong or faulty, after all, fans on is only the same as driving at 70mph, if the engine gets too cold the stat would close.Get ready!

Ed - just back from the 'Captain and Deckhand's wedding' - so have not been about to consult this weekend.

As you have already found out - that is not the ice detector!! The ice detector is a tiny little thing with just two wires - mine looks like two wires that end with a bit of heat shrink plastic.

You must have been feeling particularly brave when you took the scisoors to the Griff today! Mistakenly brave, but brave nonetheless!

only meant it stuck to indicated 70ish as opposed to normally heading up to 90s then back down again. Yup, ran fine.

So what's this bit I've snipped then? Poor little thing. Glad I can still tell which wire goes where!

Looks like a standard type connector you'll find around the loom of any car to me, obviously unused in this case .
Why your fans are on is a bit of a mystery unless this part of the loom use to / can do feed an addtional temp sensor via this route . Have a look at the wiring diag in the bible to see if you can spot it.
In the mean time just untwist the wires you put together and insulate them individually.

Well, exercising my DIY prowess further, I've actually managed to UNDO THE HARM I MADE and have returned the car to the state it was in before I started mucking around. Pretty impressive eh? BTW the alarm still worked having these 4 wires joined.

Right then, I'll just slowly & carefully put the scissors back in the kitchen drawer, and never touch them again.
