Anyone done it that way ... is it much harder to do than taking the gearbox out as well ?

Having taken the engine and box out as one then IMHO I wouldn't p1ss about and try and leave the box behind.

The engine and box is a tight fit and I wouldn't want the hassle of trying to line up the gearbox input shaft with the clutch aswell when trying to get it back in.

I started to document mine HERE any questions, just ask.

Really am still in 2 minds .... Know that both can be done relatively easily and don;t want to upset anything unnecessarrilly like exhaust position and gear lever etc ... but don't want to make job any harder than necessary ...

all depends if you have a strong enough engine crane to lift both out if we had to swap an engine we removed engine and box and swapped engines over on the workshop floor jack rear of car up a couple of foot and front 1 foot or so and remove centre console its a doddle when youve done it a few times

That's a good point. Your going to need a crane with a lot of reach and it will have to lift about 200Kg at full reach if the engine and box are together. This rules out most 1 tonne cranes. You will need a 2 tonne crane at least as most lift about 250kg at full reach.

As far as the gear leaver goes, then I would have thought you could get the lever out in about the same time as it will take to remove the bell housing bolts ??

Having taken both out together and spoken to people who have left the gearbox in then I would always take the two out together. I didn't find it was much more hassle once you set your mind to it. The problems start when you try to get it back in, lining up the gearbox is a pain by all accounts. I managed to get the engine and gearbox back in on my own in about an hour.

Why is the engine coming out ? More power required ?

I have to say i allways take the engine out and leave the box in, cant really see the point of all the extra work with the prop/gearlever mounts etc.., putting it back in is a doddle providing you have lined the clutch up correctly, if you use the weight of the crane to suspend the engine then crawl under the car and line it up from underneath it is far easier than trying to line it up from the top!

This could go on for ever

The only way to settle it is a race, could have a Griff engine out and in race at Pistonfest or summin'...

Let's face it ... nothing is straight forward working in a Griffiths engine bay ... In addition, with the only part of the engine remaining being the block without heads/inlet manifold etc then the job was made easier ...

But even with this in our favour, I see no reason at all for taking the box out at the same time ... Once you have it all ready, take the weight off the mounts and lower the engine and box as one slightly to help access to more awkward bell housing bolts, then just take em out and whip out the engine ...

Puting it back will remain the tester of course, but I'm using block and tackle rather than a crane which gives much more flexibility IMO ..

Therefore ...

Tools required

All cradled and ready ..

Mr Heath and Mr Robinson ...

One happy Griff owner and his engine block !

All packed and ready to go to a certain engine builder in Lincolnshire ...

So there we have it .... I can understand why you would want to tke the box as well, but I personally wouldn't bother...
