Hot and sunny today;
Every other car (well ok every third car ) seems to be a convertible with happy smiley occupants which is a right bore because mine is still broken. A dim and distant memory tells me that it is quite good fun driving home, or in fact anywhere in a Griff, in the sunshine with the roof off. Is that right or is my memory playing tricks ?

sorry! hope its sorted soon
Mine is still off the road and will probably be until next year.
An increase in the family has bashed the funds for running the griff this year and i think i will be too busy with our first born
.
I have stripped all the suspension off it though, just ready for the protechs.
Your right though, on a day like today i miss it really bad.

Yep, every third car is a convertible, but take solace in the fact that 90% of them have their roofs up, as they are driven by posers who don't want to mess up their hair.
Sorry to hear about the “bang, rattle, clatter” mine did that, it was a result of the Crank breaking in two, hope that is not the case with yours. All a bit depressing as I had driven it about six miles after some expensive top end work. Seems to have been away for most of the last three Months.
Yep...I'm preparing for the worst. My plan is to price up a whole new engine...then anything that comes in cheaper than that is a bonus
I wonder if a jellison-style LS6 upgrade is do-able in a griff
Matt's Rules of TVR ownership:
1) Visit's to the garage are not breakdowns but upgrade oppurtunities

Oil pressure seemed fine, although I don't drive along with my eye on the guage. Thinking back the car may have been sounding a bit noisier..but to be honest I find it difficult to guage between 'very loud' and 'even louder'. There was no catastrophic loss of oil as I checked the level once I'd stopped and it was fine...cooling system was working....I wasn't even hooning at the time (probably doing about 3000 revs in 4th). Experienced an almost total loss of drive and felt odd rattling of the clutch pedal and gear stick that initially made me (as a layman) think it could be gear-box related, but soon realised the clutch pedal was still operational and I could move the stick easily enough in the gate...and the engine was still clattering. I'm sure there is something loose in there
.It was probably about 30-40 seconds between the initial incident and me turning the engine off, so hopefully damage will be limited....hopefully....please....can you hear me up there
any thoughts?
forgot to say, it's a '98 5litre Serp

Mine is also a 98 car. Oil pressure was about 25 at tick over and 35-40 in use. Highest it has been for some time as I have always used Mobil 1 Motorsport but it went to a Tuner 6 or so miles prior to going bang and he used a thicker oil after fitting a Cam and some other stuff. After the bang on mine the oil pressure was 0 because the crack snapped off the oil pump drive. Apparently it is not an unknown problem. I was also not driving particularly hard, engine was warm, took it to 4k rpm in second, lifted off for third and it went before I got back on the throttle.
I think you are right in considering a complete engine, or at least a higher spec short engine it seems that as soon as you let people fiddle with one bit other things break. was your car standard or have you any engine mods ?
Don’t think you have hijacked the thread, much the same topic.

It is sounding very similar isn't it...will be interesting to swap notes. I too had a cam change about 18 months ago...can't remember which one off the top of my head but it was a slightly more agressive fast road cam (but not so agressive that I had to get the ECU re-mapped). How far have you got with your diagnosis/repairs Steve?
It's a difficult call on a new engine isn't it. I have a great deal of faith in my mechanic so no worries there, but how much is the labour going to cost to just invsetigate the problem? At what point should you draw the line? Still early days for me on the diagnosis front, but thinking of a monster engine upgrades helps keep a smile on my face in a wierd kind of way...

The situation with mine is not entirely straight forward. Had a Cam, Trumpets, Injectors and Remap. Don’t actually know what Cam was fitted but I asked for more torque and a bit more power at the top end but still something that was drivable. Picked the car up and it was very shunty, quite challenging to drive on a light throttle. I have driven 404 Camed cars and this was a lot worse. Anyway decided to give it a try. Initially it did seem to go quite well but is was snowing for some of the journey and raining for the rest so didn’t really form a definite opinion. Sadly it broke before I got home, it got rougher and rougher, I coaxed it home and then it wouldn’t start. Apparently one of the Injectors was stuck open which filled a cylinder with fuel and locked the engine solid, so it went back on a lorry got fixed and came back again. I was away for a couple of weeks but when I tried it (drove about 6 miles) it was still very shunty but otherwise seemed to go OK, not spectacular just OK. Next time I tried it went bang a mile or so from home, so it went back on the lorry again.
I thought about a nice cross bolted 5.3 short motor, to fit my new Cam and nicely fettled heads on but the guy who has the car didn’t think that was the best option, preferring to rebuild the broken one.
So that is what happened on my car what were the symptoms and history on yours before it failed ?
Sadly I don’t have confidence in the people that have my car because too many things have gone wrong along the way. Open to having that opinion changed, and hope I end up a happy customer. In reality I wouldn’t be surprised if evnetually I have to go with a van and a trailer and collect a pile of bits.

Tough call that one Steve. By the sounds of things, they made a mess of things to start with (faulty part), you gave them an opportunity to rectify things, which they appear to have failed in. You've been without the use of your car for several weeks (and possibly several weeks more). If it was your only car, would a hire car be forthcoming?
Once you've lost confidence in someone, especially after giving them a second chance, the relationship is ended IMHO. There's no guarantee that it will be fixed properly, and that will always be in the back of your mind. Sorry to sound so negative, but maybe it's time for an independent assessment of the damage with a view to repairs being carried out elsewhere?

no real symptoms that I noticed to be honest. The cam change came about as a result of the car failing the MOT emmissions test in Nov 2004. I had a new cam and also had to have new heads as the investigation of the initial problem showed they had become porous. The route cause of the emmissions failure was eventually traced to a dodgy connection where one of the lambdas fed the ecu
. Anyway, that was all carried out about 18months ago as I say, and apart from a brief spell off the road last summer when I totalled one of the back wheels the car has been running just fine. In fact I felt it was the best it had been. I should get some feedback from the garage over the next few days so I'll keep you updated as to what they say.number7 said:

Quite, but you would like to think that it will all get sorted without doing that. My neighbour (who has recently been called upon to help push the car) is a solicitor so if it comes to that luckily I only have to go next door.
I work in customer support and we bust a gut and spend lots of money sorting things out when there is a problem so not having an instant fix is a bit of an alien concept to me. It is very rare not to see the money back in the long run provided you do the right thing. Anyway it is promised back soon so I will give it a bit longer.
well I popped in to the garage on the way home just as they were removing the sump to reveal a broken crank shaft just like yours Steve. So that will be where the awful noise was coming from. The were a few shavings of metal in the bottom of the sump but having turned the engine off sharpish I'm optimistic that the damage will be limited. Even so I'm looking at complete rebuild/balancing of the engine so it isn't going to be cheap.
If anyone has any experience of doing this or any other recommendations then I'll be very interested to hear them.
cheers
Matt.
