Just though some of you may like to see some recent pics of the patent Moosehunter 2-Piece roof modification.

Not quite finished, but fully functional prototype which is easy to put on / off

Check out the boot space

Almost passed the torrential downpour test (a couple of minor mods required to the trailing edge) and has passed the 120 test with flying colours (kph of course)

Full Moosehunter modification information pack available, if you know the magic word

Looks good.

All you need now is semi-trailing rear suspension and a big one-piece bonnet ...hehe

Sorry to be boring, but do the insurance know, and are they OK with it? It looks like a superb job and I'd be very interested in details please. Of course the magic word is ******** isn't it?

Nice one; about time somebody actually made one rather than just talked about it (as they have done ever since the Griff came out)

Does look like a nice job - but why? Car booms like crazy with just the back bit up - as far as I can see it is all up or all down.

Doesn't look quite like that does it? p.s. for more boot space Jelli' but you've got a Chimp so you have plenty of room anyway

That's just what I thought

Clivef - Close but not quite right Happy to divulge the methods once I have finalised the prototype. Not planning on doing them for anyone else, but do have some spare materials for those wanting to have a go themselves (if you're brave enough)

Jelli - I hardly ever drive with the rear section up, and unless it's peeing down then nor do I use the roof at all, hence the reason for the mod. It's spends at least 95% of it's time in the boot and makes far more sense to have it tucked away allowing me to utilise the rest of the boot unhindered by the panel. (the term Targa I guess was not used in it's correct guise I suppose)

Griffter - The insurance has not been notified (yet). Can't see the problem however as it's not a structural part of the car and the car would be insured if I left it in the garage all the time in one piece. It's just as secure as the 1 piece (lets face it it's no real deterent to a thief in it's origonal state)

BB - Cheers. No it butts up next to itself. Happy to give the info for TGP, worth noting though that it's only planned to be a "caught out in a downpour or need to secure the car" scenario, so it may not be a mod to everyone's liking. I took the precaution of purchasing a spare roof panel before attempting the mod, not only as a safeguard if it all went pear shaped, but also as a standard Winter option if required.

Very pleased so far, there is no whistling or wind noise (apart from the usual around the windows as normal) and once I have modded the rear it should cope with being fully watertight. 2 panels join and are held together to for a panel which is for all intents and purposes just as rigid as the 1 piece "agro" option.

I just have to find a way of securing the 2 sections so they don't slide about in the boot should there be any undue tail happy driving rolleyes

Well done for taking the bull by the horns or the "griff by the targa"....clap

Looks neat, can't wait for you to share the final details... but got to ask what did you use to cut the roof in half? I dont know if I'd be brave enough to take a saw to it....and the last one I notices on ebay was £205 (I think) idiots guide would be greatfully appreciated.

Yes, you did! Good to see it coming to much better use than it was in my garage!

If that £205 on ebay is typical you got yourself a bargain too.

Looks like it still needs a drop of Renovo though.

Congratulations Moosehunter for having a go at a stinker of a job I'm sure we all wish we could do so we didn't have to fight to put the stupid thing in the boot (it's like trying to put a surfboard into a suitcase IMO)
Good luck, I hope it works.

Re the whistling windows, I found that the passenger side did that and the drivers side was perfectly quiet.
It turned out to be the glass had moved back in the runner ever so slightly and had left a small gap at the bottom of the leading edge, should be a doddle to put right

Also don't forget that the roof panel can be located out of centre by about 2-3mm either passenger side or driver side by sliding it. I find that if it's right both windows are a perfect fit, if not there's a gap one side or the other.

MH,

A top job and well done for doing what other have talked about but not produced ...

I would be very interested in understanding what was required.

I do agree to BB's comments though, as for me, the car is used all year, and although mielage is coming down, it does get used a great deal in all wethers.

Bless my old S series roof, as it was up to the job 12 months a year. Your comments seem to me to suggest that this isn't going to be as durable perhaps in a long run down pour scenario.... If that isn't the case then please correct me.

If it is the case, I wonder how much more modofication would be required to get the S series type 2 piece, which as has been highlighted is durable in the more higher mileage, using all year scenario.

Please do not take my comments as anything more than complimentary and seeking clarification.

i really do think this solves the issus for the vast majority of users and I am probably more of an exception ..... in many ways !

The only problem I have encountered is at the very front and rear edge as the joining extrusion can not fully seal at these points. There will be a way to do it I have just not given it much thought as it does the job for which I intended it at the moment

The front edge is not a problem as any water that does ingress runs directly into the channel above the windscreen

The rear however does not have this luxury and a few drips have found their way onto the rear of the transmission tunnel.

Many thanks to Victor meldrew for the spare roof. he's a top guy and very fairly let me have the roof panel for a fair price which to allowed me the oportuntity to hack my roof about (your old panel is safely tucked away in it's bag in my garage ) I hope your lad is OK now after his mis adventure.

The intracasies of bisecting the roof was carried out with the use of two purpose made jigs, 10 double checks on the measurements and some rather steady Moosestyle craftsmanship. (or a couple of bits of sawn up 2 x 2 and a wood saw if the truth be known)

I will give some further thought to the full weatherproofing for those who may wish to adopt this currently unique modification. It's only a matter of attention to detail that is required, and I am sure there are enough highly paid engineering based Griff owners who may be able to take it the extra step if required. But as a I am a roof down unless absolutely necessary type of guy, then i must admit it didn't really enter into my gameplan when planning the mod. The only planning I did do was to get a spare roof for the winter. Call me a chicken if you will, I call it keeping it simple. (a trait which has held me in good stead for many years)

Better to regret something you Have done than some thing you have NOt. I believe is the expression, although that wasn't the expression that went through my mind as I made the first cut.

I'll keep you informed of the Moose Mod as it develops

Cheers

Sounds like you are a perfect candidate for this mod then

(I take it you have a garage then, either that or a car full of water)

I hope to put together some info to send to Ballistic Banana to host on The Griffith Pages for all to see.

There's no closely guarded secrets here, and there may well end up with others who will throw their ideas into the hat to come up with different ways of achieving it. ( I'll still think mine is the best - and the first of course )

Just had to pop it in today whilst it's sitting outside work, as there was a passing shower. Took less time than the one piece would have, and as an added bonus the car is still dry inside. Result.

Time to take it off now as it's home time.
