To continue my succession of questions... Having removed the transmission tunnel cover in order to remove the gearbox I noticed that the handbrake rubber gaiter (the one riveted to the removable cover) has seen better days.

Can anyone tell me where I can buy a suitable replacement? I can't see one listed on any of the on-line TVR parts suppliers.

Thanks.

Thanks AntonyJ. I asked at my local Ford parts dept. and they could not find a matching Sierra gaiter on their system. As the parts man said, if the original was from a Ford it would probably have the Ford logo, and mine has no markings whatsoever.

None of the TVR parts suppliers could help either.

(The gearstick gaiter is a Ford part 6112048)

I'm not having any luck with sourcing this handbrake rubber gaiter. Do all Griffs have them, or might it be a mod someone has done to my car?

On closer examination I think that it is possible that this is really a gearlever gaiter that has been used on a handbrake. The question still remains though - where can I get a new one, and do all Griffiths/Chimaeras have one?

Don’t think that is standard. Can’t get the centre console completely clear on mine because the cage is in the way but can’t see a gaiter anything like that when peering in the gap.

Don't remember seeing that on mine. ('92 pre-cat)
I've got the centre console in the air at the minute so I'll have a look for you tonight.

There is one on mine and I would be surprised if its not standard, how else would you stop fumes entering?

Fair to say that the one in the picture would not stop the fumes.

Well that shows you just how much attention to detail I take eh. Mine does indeed have this rubber gaiter underneath the leather one.
Sorry I can't be any help. Good luck with the search. Oh, and let us know what you find as a replacement will you. Ballistic Banana will want to know for his Alternative Parts List.

I hope yours is not as threadbare as mine! If I do find a suitable replacement I'll post here, and tell BB.

You mean the gearbox gaiter http://www.clever-trevor.net/part/550/gearbox-gait...?

It may be possible to make one fit, but the base of the gaiter on my handbrake is more rectangular rather than square like the gear lever one.

It does rather sound as though not all Griffs have them. On my car the rubber handbrake and gear lever gaiters are riveted to a single panel which screws onto the transmission tunnel. I'll try and post a picture tomorrow.

Here's a few more pictures. I think they'll illustrate that the handbrake gaiter is narrower than the gear lever gaiter. I would have to cut a much larger hole in the panel be able to use a gear lever gaiter.....

The transmission tunnel cover with handbrake and gear lever gaiters...

The underside of the transmission tunnel cover...

The transmission tunnel cover showing a new gear lever gaiter, note how it is square rather than eliptical like the brake lever gaiter...

The hole exposed by removal of the transmission tunnel cover, that's where the handbrake light switch is located...

And the answer is...

I'm really pleased I figured this out. I had been told that the handbrake gaiter is the same as the gearstick gaiter but they look so different that this didn't seem possible. I've studied the handbrake gaiter on an off for a week or so trying to find a match and then I looked again this afternoon and the answer was obvious - it's a bit like solving one of those 'dingbat' puzzles.

The handbrake gaiter is the same as the gearstick gaiter (Ford part 6112048) but with the fixing face and one convolution cut off. See pictures below (I used a new gaiter for the gearstick, and the old gearstick gaiter for the handbrake):

Underside of gaiter

The amount to cut off the gaiter

The remaining gaiter for the handbrake

The gaiters fitted, underneath view

The gaiters fitted, top view. I know the handbrake gaiter looks too vertical here, but with time the handbrake will cause it to fold forward.
