Waxoyl or waxoil... is it worth it?
Discussion
I'd say so... cars got 48k on it now.. 12 yeasr old... been put thru a few winters in its early days... but has been Waxoyl'd from new... It's not pretty but it does it's job... I did the outriggers a couple of years back and despite a bit of surface rust in places, they were fine...
I'm now taking off the front arms and doing these areas up a bit... but was amazed to see the condition of the wishbones once I'd got all the Waxoyl gunk off... other than a few stone chip marks, they are mint!....
If you're a all year user or all summer user get this stuff on.. it speaks for itself!

looking good.
Not directed at you but I would add that inspection of the chassis and suspension members still needs to take place though. Dont just throw waxoyl at it and assume all will be well. Sometimes water gets underneath the waxoyl between it and the chassis and thats when chassis/suspension arm rot can occur. I had to get both front upper wishbones replaced due to rot beneath waxoyl.

Ive cleaned all my main chassis sections back to the powder coating from the front right back to the diff (so far). Mine also looked okay on initial inspection but I did find that there was rust on the main chassis rails at the location of the rear gearbox mounts, on the horizontal top surface of the chassis rails inside the open box section of the gearbox mount. The attached photo might make sense of that. Ive also found very slight surface rust on the joints in the chassis tubing that forms the top of the transmission tunnel, so its worthwhile checking it all if you've got the chance.

Hi,
I'm undecided at the min.
On one hand having spent best part of three days scraping 10 years of accumulated waxoyl and rubbish thats stuck to it off the chassis and the bodyshell, I'm loath to gunk it back up again as I think that I will be able to spot any problems quicker than if the chassis is covered. It was the accumulation of waxoyl on the upper suspension arms that prevented the rot in them being spotted before I bought the car and started prodding.
The other option is to thin out a tin of waxoyl and mist it on to the chassis and steam clean it off every year. Trouble is that now Ive got the 'orrible stuff off the body as well, I dont particularly want to overspray the whole thing again. I got a bit pi$$ed off with getting covered in cr@p everytime I touched the car.
Even the air filter is gummed up with this stuff - not good enough in my book.
Cheers
Marty

When I did the outriggers the other year... i POR15'd them... 3 coats and top coated white... I've also left these dry now... from the test piece on a rust old tube I have in the back garden... I don't think the POR15'd area would benefit from it doing again... just dust it off every year..
