Rangie 3.9 Fuel Consuption! The Big Gulp!

I've just bought a Range Rover Classic 3.9 as my 110 is due a little work and has been tucked up in the garage for a couple of months. I thought I'd get a Rangie V8 for a laugh, but have found that the fuel consumption is not so funny.
I don't do a lot of miles per year, but is 18mpg normal? I can hear you all saying welcome to V8 ownership, but at this rate, I'm going to need to tow a Shell lorry around with me.
Q. Apart from fitting the a LPG kit, is there anything that could be fitted/replaced to bring the MPG up a bit?
Q. Do air/fuel meters pack up to cause this huge thirst?
Q. Is this a sign that the engine has seen better days?
It's got a K&N type cone filter which I imagine doesn't help things. I'm replacing this with a standard airbox as I can live without the intake roar if it helps the MPG.

Likewise I have an L322 - far bigger and heavier and with the BMW 4.4 engine, and have averaged 19.9 over the last 10,000 miles. Yes it is a case of welcome to the V8, but also flies in the face of the log-burning lobby who get around 24 out of their TD6s, which is more than cancelled out by the extra 15p it costs to buy the oil in the first place..... muhahahahaha. Sod global warming, save the V8!

When I bought my 4.0 V8 a couple of months back I was getting shocking MPG, under 10. It had a barely noticeable miss-fire so I serviced it as a matter of course. The problem was found to be the HT leads which were breaking down where the clips hold them, due to being overstretched and not fitted correctly last time they were changed. The difference in economy is immense. I now return average of 20MPG, using earlier gear changes as there's plenty of torques theres no point in revving it. If I want to go fast-er I have Shed of The Week for that 
I would say that if you start getting silly MPG, its best to give it a service because something is not right. Even my low tech 2-door 1972 Classic used to return 18 mpg and that was 25 years ago

We used to have a 3.9 'classic' pre the Disco TDi and we averaged about 200-230 miles out of a full tank. Not sure what that equates to but we do now get 400 miles out of the Disco.
When mainly in town, my best effort in teh RR was 155 miles out of a full tank. I will look up the size of the tank and work it out. Ouch.

As several people have already said, 18mpg is pretty "good". Round town, we used to get 13mpg out of our 3.9 Classic, 21 mpg on a run and under 10mpg if driven spiritedly. We now have a Td5 Disco which gets about 20 round town, and I'm thinking of retiring that to use solely as a tow car for the TVR and buying something abstemious (IOW, boring) for everyday use.
Out of my 1994 3.9 classic with a manual I averaged about 18mpg. As has already been said 10mpg is possible if you cane it!
Its actually feels 'quite' quick too.... 70-100 in 4th is amusing! (i know its all relative!)
My td5 90 averages about 23mpg, 16 at worst! My GF used to get nearly 30mpg out of the 90 when she first drove it... now its about 25... actually... that means shes thrashing it!
I would be looking for an average of 18 or therabouts...

when i drove a family membbers TD6 about for a while i only managed about 21MPG mostly because i had to plant my foot to the floor everywhere to get it to move, when i buy one it will definatly be the 4.4, with the classic my 3.9 only managed about 15 MPG so im sorry to say, welcom to V8 ownershipGassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
