RR steering column

Hi,
I recently replaced the tired manual steering box on my Bowler with a new, later type manual steering box. I had to replace the link shaft from the bottom of the steering column to the 'box at the same time and was a little dissapointed to find that the new shaft wasn't in a box with the green oval on it.
I bolted all the bits together and was quite satisfied that all was well until I started to feel a click as I turned the steering wheel whilst moving slowly. I've had a look and it seems that even with the UJ clamp bolt tight the UJ is loose on the splines of the steering column. Is it likely that LR changed the OD of the steering column at some point (e.g. metrication)? Or is the pattern part out of tolerance?
I am going to check the fit of the old link shaft to be certain...
