Just been to see an 04 4.4 Range Rover.
Unusually for me I have not done much research, so am looking for some advice/ reasurance.
36,000 miles
17595.00
As new condition Vouge SE
TV Screens in headrests
Waiting for service history to arrive, but invoice in car for new disks and pads 850.00

He offered 12000.00 for My X5, 3.0 D Sport 53 plate 50,000 miles, which is about what I think I would get for it privatley, maybe 13000.00 with a bit of TLC.
So basically 5k to swap to a newer, lower milaege car.
Any views?

As per several other threads, check the front diff has been changed for the upgraded one. If not, there's a fighting chance it will fail fairly shortly. Book it into LR and they'll change it FOC. Otherwise, get the gearbox oil changed every other service and you should be fine.

PS: Good that it's had the brakes done. They eat them so factor that into your budget every other year.

Greeny,

Looks to me like you're getting a good deal there, which is no surprise considering now is the time good deals are to be had!

You've been offered a fantastic price for the X5 and the RR is on the next level in terms of comfort for the day-to-day hack.

I'd do it.biggrin

The RR has a far superior ride than the X5.Thats from experiance.Other things to check are tilt slide steering wheel, make sure no leaks around the lower edge of the windscreen, and the rear quarter glass. In general a costly vehicle in repairs when they go wrong.parts prices on some items are ridiculous. But we are at a point now where they can be had for silly money. My mate who is a LR independant bought one off one his customers, for a shade under £9,000.Its now used as the company hack in ferrying parts around.Shame really.

At the end of the day its your choice. In my experiance i found the X5 a well built car,but was compromised by the ride. With the RR you are getting a proper 4x4 with a very compliant ride. Its just hampered by huge running costs.Especially when they go wrong.Just a thought. But have you considered the new shape 3.0CRD Jeep?.Late ones of these can be had for very reasonable money.

Went from an X5 4.4 to a Range Rover 4.4 - couldn't be more different. X5 is marginally faster and handles better. Rangie is smoother, quieter, in a different league in terms of ride comfort and vastly more spacious. Haven't looked back.

Added a couple of posts to the crossthread on General Gassing. Market certainly doesn't like the V8s, but then it still has the pointless diesel fixation. I do worry that £18k for an 04 sounds a bit steep. If it was one of the later cars then maybe... Got any pics? Is it the original version or the interior facelift? I think the latter only appeared with the 54 plates.

Right, from what one can tell by those shockingly poor photographs, that car is indeed a pre-facelift car (note the square headlamps). Judging by the similarly shocking interior photograph it's a pre-facelift interior too (no bluetooth, BMW widescreen not LR touchscreen nav / comms). Looking at the interior shots, that's a bunch of aftermarket screens, not the official LR ones.

This immediately rings alarm bells, as the "Vogue SE" didn't exist until the facelift, so it begs the question quite what that car actually is, and moreover if it is infact a specced up SE, not a Vogue at all.... Alternatively it could be a Vogue, and the screens in the back have confused a boggo car dealer into thinking its a V-SE.

Either way, it sure as mustard isn't worth £18k, which would tally with the high offer for your X5 - he has a colossal margin built into the price.... Unless you have to have that car, or the money makes it irresistable, I'd walk away.

Hmm... if people think they can get that sort of money, mebbe I should keep wifey happy, put our 05 back up for sale and go find that blasted Disco3 she wants. scratchchin

To put it into perspective, I Paid 20.5K for an 04, 36000 mile V8, which was absolutely unmarked, from a LR main dealer back in January. The values have tanked since then, so I would be looking to pay your sort of money (maximum) to a main dealer now. L322's really are one car you should try & buy from a main dealer, purely for the warranty cover.

Interesting stuff there, thanks.
I will look at main dealer prices for comparison.
The rear screens were in the headrests. I have seen them in the back of the seats, if that makes a difference.
The Front screen was not touch screen as you say.

Let me give you my perspective. First of all here is a pic of my TD6 Autobiography that i traded for my new (07) TDV8 last week. it was a 53 plate

I took 11k for it, it had full LRSH, tho the miles were slightly high at 80k odd, but remember it is the Diesel which always commands higher prices than the petrol. As i think Red Leicester pointed out those screens are 3rd party after market ones and not LR

You have been offered a good price on your X5, but the RR is very expensive at 18k i think. Try calling a few dealers and ask them what they will give you on an 04 4.4 petrol version. You will be surprised just how toxic the petrol ones are.

As for drive between the X5 and RR there is no contest the RR will win hands down, it is in every way a superior vehicle, just the 4.4 petrol is going to be expensive to run and next to impossible to sell on to any one other than a real petrol head. You pays your maoney and takes your choice.

ETA

Touch screen was not available until 05 IIRC

^^^^^ Listen to the man. He has a good point.

Wouldn't restrict yourself entirely to the dealers - some very good private buys out there.

I will and have been investigating further.
Can not find anything near that price online with dealers. Private I may have to wait to sell the X5 and take an even bigger hit on it! It is definatley a Vogue, and I think the screens are in the right place. It also has the round headlights.
Thanks for the advice, I will keep you posted!

There was a thread on here listing all the different types of screens known to have been fitted to Rangies - may be worth a look - come what may, those screens are not LR ones...

Just found that thread, and it seems a lot of screens are after market items. Also there was no definative picture in the thread of a genuine LR fitment. But ther was a picture in the thread of the very car I am looking at, so I have mailed the poster asking for any info he has. 29th October was the date of the thread.
However, if the install is professionally done then that is fine by me, although it may be proof that it a non SE Vogue

Still searching for those super cheap V8,s though.
I have gone through all the PH and AT site adverts, and this one still seems a good price!
