Very interesting thread.

Can those in the know point me in the right direction for bulk import of raw materials, specifically for the science community i.e. Cadmium, Borated plastics etc.

This may have been asked before,

Does anyone actually design products and then have them manufactured in china?

I have a few product ideas (things like rucksacks, dont really want to go into more detail) that id like to have a look at designing and having manufactured.

Yes, That's what we do for our main product, books and point of sale materials. We also have stuff made in Spain and Syria, too...

Yes. Nothing like rucksacks, but the process and cultural hurdles are probably similar. If (when) it works well, it's extremely rewarding.

Kudos

We used to import rucksacks for a company in Ireland in quite big quantities, specifically to their design. Don't do it anymore as their customers dropped off, but we still have the contacts in China. Drop me a line if you are interested

Was supposed to be there in April, along with a tour of our factories, but bloomin' Iceland put paid to that plan.

Will be there if I get chance, but unlikely unless my search for staff is fruitful!

lot of people in that market already. Might be wise to look at something closer to home first. They can be very difficult to deal with in chine. Promise the world and deliver next to nothing. They wont care about the laws here either. If you are going to do it, start small and build trust with your supplier.

I found on company who sells electronic goods which interests me (6 phones). I talked about shipping and they told me that they will send with Dhl and at no cost to me. They will write on package that it is a gift. How usual is this with China companies? This company is 4th year cold supplier and Pioneer seller. Does this guarantee that if I make the payment, they will send me the goods also?

It would be more common for them to mark it as a sample of very low value.

No. Even with long-standing suppliers there is no way to guarantee they will send you what you want (It is easier when you have people in China working with/for you though).

Having said that, I dont know of any Chinese supplier that would sent the first shipment of goods without having full payment before hand.
