Seems that loyalty only goes one way though and your customer will happily go elsewhere if his blackmail doesn't work.
He isn't the sort of customer I would want to retain any longer.
How have you concluded that from the information given? He isn't the sort of customer I would want to retain any longer.
It could easily have been phrased "You can deal with whoever you want but if I could ask a favour of you..."

Yes you guys are right it's a lose, lose for me however the old customer spends a LOT more than the new customer. The old one has 25 years on the new one but regardless of sales (and it's not a huge amount) my loyalty lies with the old customer.
Every old customer was once a new customer...You could but why would you, their is no loyalty in business, if yur old customer could get the product cheaper elsewhere, would he hesitate? competition is how the system works, let them duke it out, just make sure you don't lose out in the process and keep them both happy, manage expectations. I wouldn't compromise on my price either.
Customer Service and engagement is how you come out of this.

We had furniture village openly say to one of our suppliers, if you allow them to sell online using the products name we will order some where else. Cue us having to sell under a different product name and the sale falling through the roof.
Not much we could do. Supplier was apologetic but had to go with the bigger customer. Happened a few times with the oak furniture we have sold. We just found new lines to sell.

I spoke to the customer. Explained I would do the same to him if the shoe was on the other foot. He took it fairly well, I gave details of a competitor that would look after him which means I'm in their good books to.
I told the old customer what I did and he was very grateful. I will use it against them if ever stop pushing our products
Could have gone a lot worse!
