Info on the gym market
Discussion
Was a thread about 6 months ago on this. Too many budget gyms springing up. One avenue seemed to be old school "sweat and sawdust" gyms. Look around you - how many gyms of each type (budget, old school, lifestyle) are there within a 10 mile radius of you?
One way I see of pursuing things is to allow people to pursue their dreams/you play on their dreams of being PTers. Create the gym and rent space (either an entire studio or just allow them to use the kit) to FIs and PTs. This is what LA Fitness has done (ie sacked all their PTers and told them they have to go freelance and rent studios/time in the gym area). Makes sense from a business viewpoint. You don't pay PTers and FIers. They pay you eg £500 a month plus the clients pay you £50 a month gym membership. Win/lose.
Taking that a step further, create a brand and set up a gym then rent the entire thing to "branch managers" as a franchise. Again, playing on peoples' dreams of running a gym. Win/lose/lose.
Bit cruel but that is business for you. You don't think Bannatyne makes his millions by dancing at the front to Body Combat do you?

Hi All,
Looking for some info on the gym marketplace such as the level of competition, new types of gym, changes in the tpye of people going, customer acquistion and retention etc.
I've had a look at some of the previous gyms threads on here but anything extra would help.

Have you looked at the accounts of the big operators, they might have KPI details such as retention, new customers etc.Looking for some info on the gym marketplace such as the level of competition, new types of gym, changes in the tpye of people going, customer acquistion and retention etc.

Lol! Yes, I read that thread, quite interesting.
Yeah, it is. One thing I've learnt is that you have to give people what they think they want or think they need. So lots of core classes, BodyBalance, crunch machines because doing crunches shrinks tummy fat, right? And assisted dip stations to burn bingo wings and tone the arms because women get muscular and bulky if they go within 5 metres of a barbell. However, that's what every other gym does...
