Interesting TV For Shop Owners
Discussion
Just a quick heads-up for any PH shop/small business people, an interesting little programme hidden away in the schedules that was quite interesting.
BBC2, Tuesdays, 7:30pm "All Over The Shop"
The premise is simple:
- Marketing 'guru' Geoff Burch visits a shop
- Tells owners why it's pants
- Owners do something about it
- Guru returns to shop where everything is now going gangbusters.
The advice seems to be astonishingly simple and obvious, but of the sort that needs an outsider to point out how simple it is. I suspect you'll spot something you could do for yourself (or worse, see something he criticises and say "Oh my God, we do that").
I presume the first episode is on iPlayer, and for the sake of 30 minutes it's worth videoing

I just posted this over on P&P, and was politely pointed over here; thanks Taita
Here's what I posted (not realising this thread was here) .....
Just watched a brilliant programme on BBC2 called 'All over The Shop'.
Basically, it's a bit like the John Harvey-Jones "Troubleshooter" programmes of old (but much more basic), whereby the expert (Geoff Burch) visits retailers and tells them what to do to turn their business around.
It was pretty basic stuff, and I have to be honest fundamental; but bloody damn good viewing.
Watching it did make me wonder how some of these retailers survive.
For example, on tonights show they had 2 sisters who run a gift shop, but one of the sisters also makes bespoke/personalised tableware, cards, etc, etc. So they had a shop .... but no website .... no catalogue ..... no idea what a computer was .... etc, etc.
As I say, it's a pretty basic programme, but could easily be an hour long, focusing on more detail on each of the 3 retailers he focuses on each week.
And as stated above, how the hell do some of these retailers survive!

My God, did I just call one of the lead Mods on REPOST!
And I'm a witness
Mr Expert's ideas are very easy - he just copies ideas from similar shops that are successful. The thing is that when you run your own business it's easy to be too close to it and lose sight of the fundamentals, or become a victim of vanity or ego.
