Just upgraded to one of these on my o2 contract.

It comes with 'free sat nav for life' but I was just wondering, does it use GPS or the GPRS data link, i.e. do you have to pay to use it? I must say I was lured by the free sat nav application especially since it will be handy in France.

Cheers smile

Ovi maps IIRC you can pre-download all the maps onto a large memory card, then use the GPS to work out your position

And totally rather good as well.

There can be a small amount of data used by AGPS, as well as the weather and some other little things.

I shoved in a 8gb memory stick into my phone (E75), and preloaded all of the UK on it, does the job

UK maps are around 100 meg - I've got the UK and Florida maps on mine (ready for hols), together they're 250meg.

I've got an 8gig card in my cheapo 5230, 2 gig free, 100+ meg of pics, 500meg of videos, 4gig of music, 100 meg of apps .... handy little gadget. Only had it a few months, but I've got the urge for a new phone gadget (N8?).

Just don't drop your X6. I dropped mine twice in the space of two days, now the speaker buzzes like mad. frown It's very slippery and difficult to grip when you've got dry skin on your hands (swafenga isn't very caring).

Ah, are the maps held in the memory or does it use GPRS? Mine is as it came from o2, I can't see anywhere for a memory stick to go but it seems to have all of the UK on it.

Ovi Maps uses a data connection for two core things:
1) AGPS - a small data packet is sent to Nokia's servers with details of your current mobile cell. This is looked-up and a return packet sent telling the software the best satellites it should be looking for. The GPS doesn't actually NEED this but taking a fix can take ages without it as they can only squeeze a tiny antenna in with all the other phone/camera/etc electronics.

2) To download map data that isn't already cached locally. A UK phone is probably going to come pre-loaded with the UK maps but cross the channel to France or further afield and they won't be there. In this case they are downloaded (and saved) as required.

Both/either of these connections can be disabled.

Further you can connect the phone to a PC and via the Ovi client download and transfer any maps you like over the Interweb to your phone.

Having the whole worlds data on there would need a lot of storage for data 99% of which will never be used. If you are going to France for a week you can just download the French map data in addition to the UK. If you then go to Germany you can either add German data if you have the space or drop the French and add the German.

all of this is over the Internet on your PC so no data charges.

Top stuff, thanks for the help. smile

If travelling abroad I take it would be best to disable the data connections to stop any astronomical data charges? I noticed when using the sat nav a little bar appears in the bottom corner with what is presumably the satellite strength and a KB data counter. I am guessing this is the data that is being sent back and forth via AGPS?

I downloaded the Nokia/Ovi PC suite yesterday and had a good play. My god, what an unwieldy piece of software. It prompted me to download updated maps, it started off by deleting what was already on the phone and then just stopped, leaving me with no maps or voice guidance files!

It took me ages to download just the UK maps and one voice guidance file; either it’s painfully slow or it was lots of people watching the footy over the internet. My DSL is usually pretty fast.

Do you know how I can get a 'Favourite' route from the Ovi maps website onto my phone? This is supposed to be possible but I can't find out how to do it!

I have an X6 on Orange and have somehow managed to turn off the online connection when I open up the map. Any idea as to how you switch it back on?

I've just a play with mine and I think I know how to do it.

If you go into the 'Maps' menu press the little spanner in the bottom left hand corner

Then select 'Internet' and then you've got the option to have an offline or online connection. I am guessing this how you disable it if you want to rely soley on GPS in order to avoid being arse raped for roaming charges.

I've just ordered an X6 to replace my iPhone as I'm sick of the iPhone TBH. These maps for the X6 - can I download them on my PC before the x6 arrives so I've got them waiting? If so, is there a link anyone can put up please?

Cheers

Install the software which comes with your phone, plug your phone into the PC and open the programme, there is a button to update the maps and only takes a few seconds, totally hassle free and easy! biggrin

This looks like a good alternative to the iphone and HTC Desire (which I didn't like on first impressions). I've been happy with my N95 8GB so might give it a try.

Got one today, have to wait a few days for my contract to swap from the ancient Talk 60 to whatever the hell it is now - Racoon I think, unlimited pretty much anything anyway - before I can mess around with web stuff and the maps.

Seems good though, interface is straightforward although I might be a bit tap-happy as it's my first touchscreen devive. Managed to get my contacts copied over from my old 6300 fairly painlessly with PC Suite after I downloaded it from Nokia, the supplied DVD would run in my laptop.

Currently charging so haven't messed with the camera yet although I'm sure it'll be a lot better than the laughable 6300 one!

Cheers,
Rob

The camera is not great in my opinion,, it's bloody hard to get a steady picture, my N96 was the same, my N95 however was excellent.
