Just sold my ipad :-(
Discussion
As much as I love it, there are just not enough reasons to justify one as well as the netbook. I thought I'd share my thoughts with you all.
I don't much care for the typing experience compared to a keyboard (yes I know I can buy a keyboard, but this isn't convienent to use when carrying around).
I've been disappointed with the Apps. Not many free ones, also the prices seem to have jumped up from iphone prices (doubled in some cases).
I have an iphone and although bigger, it is essentially exactly the same product.
I usually use it on the lap, whilst watching tv, and the viewing angle always seems to be wrong. Netbook just sits nicely. Plus the screen is very fiddly and not accurate enough like a mousepad.
The only plus side for me is the battery life and the speed of turning the thing on. Leave it on standby and it'll last nearly a week for me. Turn it on and you'll be on the net within seconds rather than minutes for the netbook. But I just can't justify the money for this small benefit.
I've lived with it for over a month to try it, but gotta say it's not been the replacement for the netbook I was hoping for. I find myself still reaching for the netbook daily as there's stuff that the ipad just can't do. Nor will it ever without usb ports, ability to print, etc etc.
Anyway, on the plus side......got my money back on fleabay, so a months usage hasn't cost anything!
My advice, get a decent netbook (not the £200-£300 ones, spend the same as an Ipad and you will get something much much better, with much bigger memory!
All IMHO of course

For the speed aspect stick one of these in the netbook

I do agree, there is nothing I can't do on my iPhone more conveniently or quicker on a laptop.

I had one for about 2 weeks. Sold it, couldn't justify something that was really just an oversized ipod, and I had a number of issues with websites (some did not work correctly resulting in me using the PC), and a number of reservations about the device, and the apps weren't up to snuff (shame to see they clearly still aren't).
Happy enough to keep using a mobile phone for my casual portable use and a proper PC for proper stuff.
iPointless.

They are sold out everywhere.I still really like mine, but it's a media player most of the time for me as I travel a lot.

And stick Ubuntu on it. Open the netbook lid to online in 20 secs incl typing the password from suspend....http://www.ebuyer.com/product/175721

I don't wish to sound like a fanboi, so lambast me if you will, but the macbook sat on my lap I think will very safely tick the "start up speed" and "battery life" boxes that you requested, as well as doing everything a laptop should. Downside compared to a netbook (that I have also owned) is that it is not quite as portable. But for sitting on the sofa surfing the net, I have no intention of replacing it anytime soon.
Purely for this reason, I'm not intending on getting an ipad either. They do look awful nice though, even if Jake Humphrey does look like a bit of a plank doing not a lot with it on the F1 coverage...

Very interesting on both accounts......in reality is it worth it? How much hassle will it be to do both and will I notice much difference to XP?
Have a chat to Lord Grover - he has just put an SSD in a netbook and ISTR it boots from cold in about 15 seconds...If I could justify putting a 150+ quid drive in a machine that only cost GBP210 new, then I would!

I agree with most of the sentiments here but will probably keep mine for now. The lack of Flash is the most frustrating thing for me, It never really worried me on the iPhone but you really notice it on the iPad.
I think where iPad does come into it's own is if you use trains and planes a lot as it is a far nicer platform than a iPhone for books, video, and email.
Last point is if you have a jail broken iPhone you can tether it to a Wifi only iPad without the need for buying a data contract.

I have no idea why anyone's spent such a ridiculous sum of money on an inferior product. It really does nothing more than an ipod touch except for having a larger screen. For the price you can buy a really well specced laptop that does everything an ipad does, and more.
Because it's a better media player than the iPod Touch. It's nicer to surf the net on, especially when I'm in bed and as I spend lots of time in hotels it much better than the laptop as it doesn't get hot. It's also nicer to use if you need to do something online quickly. It's also a toy, and I like toys!
