I posted a simple support question over a week ago. In the 'old' days, they would have responded, actioned and closed my request before I had a chance to submit the request smile

However, after a week, I had no response, so had to follow up with a 'Hello, anyone there' rolleyes

I know I'll be moving all my sites in the coming months. Just need to find a suitable host. Fecked to know where I'll start.
yes same feeling here :-(
I may bite the bullet and go onto my own server in a DC somewhere.

I've had all of my web stuff on cheap virtual machines on Amazon EC2 and EDIS for a couple of years now.

I've run my own mail server in the past, but IMO it's too much hassle.

It has all gone downhill since Jamie left.
Absolutely... when Jamie had it, it was great and never an issue. Since he moved on to other ventures, it seems he stole the customer services model and its now replaced with what looks like a sub standard one.
Plus when I had issues, (which occasionally happens with all systems), I knew who to pester if it didn't get sorted fast enough. biggrin

I have tweaked my spam settings to the point when none of my legitimate online banking information can come through yet I am still getting spam from other 'banks' as well as casinos, pharmacies etc etc. Its extremely annoying as I've had this domain for years and the amount of junk mail thats arriving has gone up an order of magnitude in the last couple of months. I'm tempted to migrate away anyway..

Any suggestions for a host that has a more straightforward, (and powerful) spam system?

Not had a problem with VidaHost (TSOHost). However if it's just your email, simply create a GMail account, add the email account as a POP3 account and you'll have the spam filtered for you.

To add some balance I've just had to deal with support and they've been as helpful as in the past.

Some of the posts above have made me a bit nervous so I decided I need to set up a PHP script that would backup my MySQL databases and email a zipped copy to me each day. They pointed me to a starter script (I used a different one in the end but it was a good starting point) and have now set up a chron job to run it every day for me. Assuming the chron kicks in as expected I'm a happy bunny.

Stacks of spam here too. Not so bad so far today, though.
I wonder if they've stopped subscribing to spamhaus because I'm getting multiples of the same spam, which is the exact type r1 used to catch, direct spam would usually only be the ones to get through.
They've still got SpamAssassin - well my accounts have. You can configure yourself.
Where are you finding the settings for that?

ETA. Ah, i see it's a user by user setting, not a global admin setting.

How about 50p per annum, and a half-eaten pack of minstrels?

Personally I'd not go down that route. It's really not cost effective for a single server compared to just renting one - especially when you consider you things like remote power cycle, kvm, hardware support included.

That and data centres are horrible places to be (I spent 2 days in the damn things last week, freezing to death, racking up new kit and sorting out routers).

Alright, and one of your cars, of my choosing.

:shakes hand:

Perfect, we have a deal!

The only reason for me is I'm at home in a DC, networking and security are my 2 pleasures at work so the idea would be to co-lo with one at the office DC/server/render farm.
Even then like you say, i may go down the rental route just for PITA stakes but it really depends on what i can get set up at work, as i envision that being the main server as the DC has connections to both SuperJanet and IIRC BT's UK regional backbone AS2856

Ah well, that's a different story then if you can use work DC!

and while you're in there try and sneak in an Atlas Probe or even better Anchor node wink

I raised a support ticket with Reg1 late last night for something to be done, and I got a response within seconds! (It was just like the old days...) I almost started to feel bad about migrating to TSOhost.

But unfortunately after much faffing and telling me to look for options I don't have available in my control panel, whoever was monitoring the support tickets couldn't help with my request and told me it'd be passed on to a "network engineer".

I mailed again an hour ago to see whether anyone is available yet, but they haven't even replied to say "no". So I'm glad I'm going now!

Given a lot of PHers went to R1 because of old esteemed member, perhaps advice as to how to move away from R1 should be a sticky. I've never used R1 but I feel a lot of people are now quite stuck.

For those considering colocation or a VPS, I can recommend Bytemark. I've no connection aside from being a long term customer. They know what they're talking about as well.

I'm not a mod, but I feel that this is not likely to be something that PH would get involved in, but I could be wrong.

I used R1 as I knew personally one of the owners and given the choice, I usually send my business in the direction of people I know and trust. Whilst I'm having some issues now, ultimately my domain is a personal one so a bit of a pain, but not critical. I am about to open a domain for business reasons and will probably look elsewhere for that.

You're probably right, this thread should suffice.
