Not to mention the speed at which they released it now.
XP: 2001/08
Vista: 2007/01
7: 2009/10
8: 2012/10
XP is the outlier. XP: 2001/08
Vista: 2007/01
7: 2009/10
8: 2012/10
Look at the dates on 3.1, 95, 98 and 2000 if you count that. Plus NT which at that point was a whole different family.
Bit off topic, but nice read about the HoloLens:

Being an old C64 geek, I've been following Jeri Ellsworth's work for years, most recently here "CastAR" start-up. Only last week they were tweeting about speaking to VC bods. This week, I guess they're crying into their cornflakes. It's a brutal world, out there...https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/less-obvious-yet-fu...

I have the tech preview on my personal PC. I've only very briefly used Win8, but I really didn't like the UI. I found I had to google how to do simple things.Win10 is the best OS I've personally ever used, (can't get on with OSX either). As for fast, my PC boots to the desktop from cold in 4 seconds (SSD as boot drive obviously).

There's no doubt that 8 is very good under the hood, the problem has been the contentious UI.
Hopefully 10 will introduce a more desktop friendly UI. I can't believe MS won't learn from 8.
Apparently 10 detects what type of machine you have and changes the ui automatically, ive ran 8 and 8.1 and why they didn't have it detect if you had a mouse/touchscreen and automatically switch to the right mode I will never know, after setting 8.1's ui up its very usable, very stable and very quick. Im looking forward to upgrading to 10 on both my desktop and mobile.Hopefully 10 will introduce a more desktop friendly UI. I can't believe MS won't learn from 8.

I do like 8.1 better than 7, but the problems aren't just training/adjustment. The metro apps are cr*p, you still have to update software individually, and they should have isolated stuff more (all to be addressed in 10).
The metro apps do vary in quality, like apps on any of the platforms.Since 8.1, apps update automatically and silently in the background (unless you specifically turn it off)
Not sure what your last point was, if you're talking about app isolation, then store apps are sandboxed and very limited in what they can do without permission.

Yes I meant non-metro software, i.e. the stuff people actually use. Win 8 still uses shared component libraries, and I think a modern OS should be completely isolated from third party software. I'm hoping Win 10 applications will use their own instances of whatever libraries they need, and the package manager will update everything with a single click. Stuff will uninstall cleanly, and there will be no more "a new version is available" every time you open the browser.
Meanwhile the pretty GUI will keep everyone else happy.
So you're saying the legacy part of windows 8 is the same as it always has been? That's kind of the definition of legacy.Meanwhile the pretty GUI will keep everyone else happy.
Windows 8 apps are compartmentalised and uninstall completely along with associated local user data, but the win 32 apps act as they always have. Unless I've missed some big announcement, I wouldn't expect any change to the legacy software handling in Windows 10.

I couldn't understand why I hadn't seen a 'face on' picture of Hololens, until I googled it.
Hmmm. Point like a dick, gesture like a dick, look like a dick.
Good luck with that Microsoft or am I still in the dark ages?!
Of course you're in the dark ages, this is THE FUTURE Hmmm. Point like a dick, gesture like a dick, look like a dick.

I'm now installing Windows 10 on the laptop, upgrading from Windows 7. It'll be nice to have (almost) instant on.
Not sure how (or if) I'll upgrade the tablet; that only has 32gb internal, currently around 6gb free. Apparently the install needs 16gig?

Someone probably said the same thing when Walkmans and headphones first made an appearance, I heard it said (and probably said it myself) when hands free kits came out and it was said about people walking down the street with their gaze glued to Facebook on their smartphone. Technology makes people look like gimps, then it's old news and everyone gets over it.Hmmm. Point like a dick, gesture like a dick, look like a dick.

Anyway, Windows 10 has now installed. Took about 2 hours. Only irritations so far - by default it put the task bar on both displays and default text size was HUGE, which looked stupid on the external display. Just works like a slightly snappier copy of Windows 7.
I'll take back comments about it seeming okay.
CPU temp is up by about 20 degrees (used to be 47-50, now 68-70), start button is sluggish as hell. Browser startup is slow - the Atom Z3740D Windows 8.1 tablet now appears to run quicker than my i7-2630QM laptop.
Great.
I'll stick with it, but it hasn't taken long for my initial impressions to change.

Yeah that technical preview runs like a dog.
Turns out that a video driver update I ran before the update was part of the cause. When I first got the laptop I spent a little time overclocking the GPU (NVidia GT520M). It ran perfectly until I tried running Warframe. Which happily told me that the GPU was running too hot ... since then I switched to the Intel HD3k. The GPU update reverted settings to the NVidia. Its now back to running between 48 and 60 degrees. But it is definitely sluggish.
The interface is okay, the start button behaviour is a little strange, but easily customised.
