Thanks for everyones help, got a writer today at a local shop, bunged it in, all working fine

Couple of questions

This one is 56x that replaces my 4x that i thought was fast

What speed should I burn at ? tried it on "fastest" at lunch, took no time but the finished CD doesn't work (no clue on the spindle as to what speed it should be)

Is £55 about right for one of these, seemed pricy, but I needed to find out if it was the problem so no mail order

Thanks again

Ben

Depends on the CD you're burning to. I have a 48x speed writer and the only CD's I use that give 48x speed write without errors are TDK's (I'm sure there are others though)

If in doubt turn the write speed down, a few minutes longer to wait is nothing if you are going to be sure of a no errors burning.

Thanks,

Turn the speed down to what ??

Will it be (I mean is it likely to be) OK on say 16x or go for even less

Time isn't that important but I just want to know if there would be a marked change between burning at say 4x and 8x

With no speed on the spindle, if they are a fairlt recent buy I think they will be something between 16x and 48x speed discs.

So I think you can be safe on 8x until you know how fast you can go.

(Of course there might be some dodgy copy protection on the CD proving a problem) Nero is a good copier although I'd recommend Alcohol (hic ) as the better/newer option - www.alcohol-software.com/index.php You can get a free trial.
