This undersea cable loss thing is interesting, it's amazing just how dependent we have all become on communications around the world and just take it for granted. It reminds me of that cable termination place in Cornwall(Porth Curno? That fantastic beach next to the Mynack outdoor theatre), so weird to be looking at one end of a cable and thinking the other end is in India

The Porthcurno landing station is quite impressive, I spent a good few hours wondering around the telegraph museum there while my parents visited the Minack (which has some pretty swish webcams if anyone cares). Infact the whole area is great if you are interested in Comms and that sort of thing, with Goonhilly not too far away too.jumplead said:

FLAG Europe Asia (FEA) is cut about 20Km off Alexandria, while SeWeMe3 was affected by engineering works. The restoration paths go through Singapore, Hong Kong and may well start to saturate internet exchanges in New York and the west coast.
Oh yes, FEA links up with FLAG Atlantic which is a major transatlatic cable route from Europe. That is probably quite busy too for IP traffic.

Nothing to do with the magic T, it's obviously climate change related. Oceans are heating up and we all know what happens to things that are washed on too high a temperature.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7222536.stm

It happens. Subsea seismic activity can do this. However, talking to the guys at work SWM4 and FEA were cut by a ship dragging it's anchor. I'll call mates at FLAG (I used to work there) on Monday and find out about Falcon. This was a new system we put in a couple of years back.
Bear in mind this stuff isn't dug in deep, if at all, and can move about the sea bed by a fair way. It's damn hard to find with the maps and a special cable ship, let alone trying to damage it.
As reference, our European land network is over 50,000Km of lit fibre and in the summer when roadworks are at their highest we can get 5+ cuts a week. It's a bit easier to fix on land though!

Looks like PH is hosted by Carrenza in Global Switch in Docklands. They're taking upstream from Global Crossing to get to the net via Linx. If they'd like a somewhat better connected hosting offering they can PM me
Having said that, from any sensible ISP in the UK the connectivity should be decent and pretty much unaffected by the cable cuts. So if it's slow for you do a traceroute to www.pistonheads.com and see where it gets held up. I'd bet it's the server end...
