wrote/coded mine from scratch with Dreamweaver
imagine building a small car after standing on the hard-shoulder for while, watching the traffic, then walking into a branch of Unipart with a chequebook.
love a challenge me.
i did write a site in 1994 using only HTML , before most of you lot even had an email address, but I got kicked off the university server for "operational policy violations"
I remember the day Netscape was floated on the US stock market and the price went up about 1000% in 24 hours. Could have made millions on that, such an obvious investment at the time. Then banner ads, java, IE, flash, etc etc. What a journey

For a beginner freewebs is pretty good. If you're feeling brave you could have a go at creating a wiki site http://www.wikispaces.com/ . Plenty of other sites allow you to setup blogs and so on, depends on what sort of website you're wanting?
