Does anybody know what the model number , Apple MacBook Pro MD035B/A means? It's here: http://www.johnlewis.com/231461636/Product.aspx and I can't see the model number anywhere else.

I'm trying to work out it's an early 2011 or one of the current range scratchchin

I think it might be the early 2011 model, as it has the 750gb HDD and 1gb video RAM: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/...

So it might not be the best price...

It's not current - if you look on the Apple website, current 15.4" MBP are MD318 & MD322.
Can't see anything specific about it there, only that it's listed in the OS Lion upgrade program.
I reckon from the specs and model number designation, that it's a mid-year update (May/June) or refers to a BTO (build to order) based on the 'Early 2011' (February) version.
If you've an iPhone/iPod Touch, download the Mactracker app (free) and it may have it listed or referenced.

Hmmm, the listing on the OSX upgrade site suggests that it's a 2.3ghz CPU (MacBook Pro 15.4" 2.3GHz/4GB) which would suggest it's the same as one of these: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/G0M1CB/A Albeit with the bigger and slower HDD, so that it might be a good price!! confused

Thanks for the advice above, ended up buying it smile

Now, the questions begin. What's the best method of running Windows on a Mac? I'm used to VMs on my W7 box, but I'm not sure what's the best way on a Mac? I'm assuming that I'll be running W7 as I have the licenses for that.

Both VMware and parallels very good and popular.

Parallels just has the edge on performance at the moment, but that could change, and VMWare is, I believe, better at supporting out-of-the-way operating systems.

What about Boot Camp?

That's the fastest way of all, but that means dual-booting. If you want to use a Boot Camp partition in Parallels, you have to do a bit of fannying around with hardware profiles in Windows to keep things on the level.

I'm happy to mess around with Windows, I'm confident that I can do that. I'd like it to be as much like a Windows machine as possible for the Mrs when she needs it.

Parallels in full-screen mode will do that without the need for an additional partition.

I use it in Coherence mode, so that there's no separate Windows desktop, applications just sit on the same desktop as my OS X ones, and the system tray icons go into my OS X menu bar.

Thanks, I'll give it a go tonight.

I use both, but my parallels is v6. Current vmware fusion is my preferred option currently as using the bootcamp partition is a cinch, but I hardly use it TBH.

when using parallels or vmware what does one do about antivirus/firewalls on the windows partition?

do you just runt them as normal? if the windows partition becomes infected, it won't spread to the mac stuff will it?

I just run Microsoft Security Essentials in my Windows virtual machines.

Just got it all up and running this evening, pretty painless really. I've noticed a performance hit when running W7 as well, which I guess is to be expected. I only have 4gb of RAM so that might be upgraded in the future if I use W7 lots

Just noticed this as an option in 'preview' on OSX. It may well have been there for donkey's years, but I've never noticed it before.

it seems you can import pictures from you iPad, (and presumably any iOS device, and maybe cameras, etc as well? Can anyone try it?), using the option 'import from ******'s iPad' found in the file menu;

Thought it might be of interest to some peeps.

In fact, having just had a look, it seems you should be able to browse, and import from a connected camera as well.
