Dunno what "Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 9" is (assume something new/fangled vista), but an empty default gateway can't be right, surely?

I was presuming that the "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection" was the one to look at, as that's how I'm plugged in to the router? This has a default gateway of 192.168.1.1.

Not sure what the tunnel ones are either - presumably they are Vista things?!

It can cause problems, they should definitely have different names. Saying that, I'm not sure if it's causing the problems you're seeing - I'd expect it to have complained about duplicate names.

It's a quick and easy thing to rule in or out, though.

It's a good "spotted" Also, oncce that's done, power everything off and then power up just the router and rogue machine to be sure there are no conflicts. Could even be worth re-enabling DHCP at that point.

OK. I now have two machines: Simon-Laptop and Simon-Desktop smile
Re-enabled "automatically assign IP address" and so on.
Rebooted everything + router.

And I'm posting this from the rogue machine! Woo hoo!

Thanks so much to everyone who has contributed to this thread. PH is truly an amazing resource. Virtual beers all round.

Naming the computers was not something that crossed my mind really, I bought them 2 years apart and just didn't think of potential conflicts. DOH!

Can I ask a question of the Experts please.

Why is it working with a DNS address of 192.168.1.1 ?

Should't that be the address of an actual DNS server?

Not necessarily... Most home routers act as a DNS proxy.

boocks. Not so fast networking gurus.
The rogue machine has just kicked me off the net again after working for 15 minutes or so. I am back to Local Connection only, and "there may be a problem with my DNS configuration".

How can it work and then just stop, with me changing nothing at all?!

Try pointing your dns address out to your ISP's DNS servers rather than your router.
