That's the thing though - we don't want a crippled laptop running various versions of cripplewareOS that is designed for more powerful machines. W7 on netbooks runs like a dog, XP is a dead OS, and then there are the various Linux versions which are good, but still lame.
Windows 7 Pro runs like a dream on my Compaq Mini 311c Netbook.

11.6" 1366 x 768 screen
160gb 7200rpm Hard Disk
3gb RAM (upgraded from 1gb)
HDMI out
Webcam
Card-reader
Ethernet
WLAN
USB

£300. It really is stonking.

I quite like my Dell Mini 10v 'Hackintosh' running Snow Leapord. Cost me £130 from the Outlet and it runs really very well, much nicer than any of the Windows netbooks I've used. I want an iPad but just don't see an extra £300 of value over the netbook. All I really use it for is internet, email, spotify and watching recorded/ on-demand TV.

We got an iPad on a bit of a spur of the moment thing, the laptop had died a death, I was looking for an iPhone 4, which would have to run along side my company blackberry. They had none anywhere, when we saw the ipad it made sence for me and the mrs.

It is an expensive browser, but tied in with a home stereo, mobile sky sports, a wedding photography portfolio, general photography portfolio, mobile email, and decent mobile Internet, it adds up as not a bad replacement. We are always adding things, and finding uses for it, so it seems a good purchase for me. Same as what it would have been for an 18 month iPhone contract, when I didn't need a phone as my work one covers everything.

If we had a laptop, then I wouldn't have looked twice at it. It will never replace the pc, but that can stay in the office for when I'm "working"

I'm very tempted by an iPed which a guy at work can get from China when he goes over.
I saw these, are they up to much? I'm always dubious about these copies from the far east, but i've never met anyone who's tried one
Never tried an iPad copy, but seen plenty of iPhone copies and my advice is don't bother. Never seen a decent one that's even close to the originals. There's a reason why they're 20 quid wink

I SO wanted an iPad but after going through all the thought processes many here have gone through I decided on a decent netbook (way cheaper than the iPad I wouldve got)

Just opened the lid and from standing start it was 14 seconds to be back on this page typing this reply.

Thats on Windows 7 on a Samsung N220 netbook with the option which powers it off but retains memory on low power.

Its been in standby in that state since last night and the battery is still showing about 8 hours left in it.

I'm thinking I made right decision :-/

And stick Ubuntu on it. Open the netbook lid to online in 20 secs incl typing the password from suspend....
Ubuntu - is that really an option for an absolute novice [like me]?
Yup - there are a few on here that have given an ubuntu machine to their parents and not had any hassles.
You can put it on a memory stick and "try before you install" so you can see if it works for you.
Lots of guides on the web on how to do this.
