Do any other ROMs have data2sd? It's a really slick setup. App2sd seems clunky after the elegance of data2sd...

Did you do a Titanium Backup before loading the ROM? If so you should be able to do a restore, what issue are you getting?

Make sure you have the right SMSbackup app the are several with similar names. I ahev used SMSBackup+ and had no issues doing a restore.
I did - I just can't see a means of restoring the apps to the way they were. Unless I'm missing the bleeding obvious (probably...) rolleyes <--at self

Yeah, I think I stuffed up the SMS back up. The one you used seems better as it saves to SD card first. Mine sent to Gmail fine but now I can't seem to get them back on phone. Not an issue just a nuisance. Probably does good to have a spring clean! wink

I followed your order and it worked very well for me - t hanks very much.

My problems have been in trying to restore my previous apps. I don't have many that I'm heartbroken to lose, but some issues:

I downloaded SMS backup that sent the SMS straight to Gmail - there doesn't seem to be a restore option. I now realise there was a similar app that backed them to SD card - that might have been the better move.

I have titanium download - can't seem to restore apps with it.

I also used AppBrain - I can see my old apps but none of the previous settings. Doesn't seem to be a clear way of sending them to the phone, from the phone.

Seem weird to get this far and get stuck on the seemingly easy bit of restoring everything... Any ideas.
Hi mate, just seen you asked this of me earlier; my apologies for not spotting it!

The apps thing should be a doddle if you have Titanium - there will be a folder on the SD card called TitaniumBackup. Now, assuming you took a backup before you flashed, just copy that folder back to the SD card and then run the restore within Titanium.

I had to use AppBrain as 'plan B' because for some reason I couldn't get root without doing a factory reset. The method I used was to 'sync' with AppBrain before flashing, then after I'd put Starburst on, I re-installed AppBrain. I then went into my AppBrain backup online and 'pushed' the apps back to the phone (if you've used AppBrain you'll understand what I mean).

Here are the apps I currently have installed: http://www.appbrain.com/user/Funk/

This is the SMS backup software I use: http://www.appbrain.com/app/sms-backup-restore/com... which does backup to the SD card.

The benefit of using Titanium is that you don't lose 'in-app data' but you do with AppBrain. As I say, AppBrain was a second-best choice in that scenario as I couldn't get rooted in order to run Titanium - a catch-22!

Finally I have a replacement phone. They found me a Desire.

I am probably missing the obvious, but how do I restore everything from my back ups? I have appbrain, Orange sync, and sms back up. How do I get everything back?

Install AppBrain on your phone from the Market. Then sign in to AppBrain on your phone and the site, but don't sync on the phone yet - go onto the website and 'push to phone'. When you next sync AppBrain on the phone it'll install all the apps (via the Market - you still have to 'Install' on each one but it's better than having to find them all individually). I found there are a few apps that are no longer available on the Market but I can live without a few of them.

To restore SMSs, install the same SMS backup software you used before. There should be a backup of the SMSs saved on your SD card (if it's anything like the one I use) which will be found by the backup software when you ask it to restore.

Aside from Google Navigation, what sat nav apps are people using? I'm looking for an app that stores the maps on the SD card (UK only).

Does anyone have any idea how much of my data allowance would be used for a 800 mile trip from Yorkshire to Cornwall and back if i did use Google Navigation?

Thank you Funk. Sorted. All aprt from text messages anyway. I lost the SD card with the phone, but I thought that the SMS were backing up online. They were not though. Thats those lost for good.

There are a couple that backup online. Which one were you using?

Ah ok. I use this one: http://www.appbrain.com/app/sms-backup-restore/com...

It doesn't backup OTA; perhaps I should investigate one that does..

Just looked at the one you're using, and I'm always wary about providing my gmail address and password to 3rd-party apps... Call me paranoid..

Don't know what the problem is, runs fine on mine (Snow Leopard).

It's by far the easiest way to root the phone if you can get it to work.

Are you using this link?

That's the one. Just tried it again but still says it can't run on my version of OSX. Maybe it's a Snow Leopard thing.

Cheers.

Appears that it only works on Snow Leopard. A little search shows that many have come up against the same problem.

What are people using for Navigation? I used TomTom for years on my WinMob devices until they sold out and got bummed by Apple. I've been using Google navigation quite happily in the UK on my Desire-Z, but will be overseas for a while (principally Europe) and don't want to mega-roaming-data-arse-charges that will come with it.

Any suggestions?

I've heard good things about Sygic.

I used Copilot on my XDA before, and I liked it - especially the 'Live' features.

Check PocketGPSWorld for better reviews.

That's a bummer , there is always the Gold card route but that looked far too complicated for me.
