I've never bothered with that (AV or firewall) either. Never had a problem - the only problems I've had have been due to rubbish phones, or were self inflicted (messing about with custom ROMs etc).

Has anyone else noticed some intermittent 'stuttering' on their N4.

Ironic, I was singing its praises to people yesterday saying I hadn't noticed any foibles, and then later saw my mate, whom I passed it to, while banging on about how fast it was.... that was when I noticed, as he was swiping through homescreens it was stuttering like mad rolleyes

Restarted and that seemed to help.... for a while, then it did it again. It was like going back in time to having an HTC Desire with Android 2.1 on it, sluggish and stuttering performance.

I tried killing all running tasks which made no difference, before restarting, and its been fine ever since.

The only thing I could find on searching was the possibility of (1) WiFi connection causing it - disabling and re-enabling could fix? and (2) the Kernel (I am on stock, but some people on XDA are saying a custom Kernel helped them extract even better performance... but I am very reluctant to get back into the whole rooting / ROM / Kernel game - I bought it because Vanilla Android is how I like it and that stuff just makes life more complicated again...

Of course stuff that bothers me tends to not bother others, or they don't notice, but even my GF noticed it when I handed her the phone!

It could be something running in the background I guess but I run a pretty lean install - I treat it the same way I would treat old versions of Windows - don't have anything you don't need.

Confused, and its a minor thing, but irritating as I bought this phone for its blazing performance, which it does have most of the time.

Have you rooted yet?

You could install CPU Tweaker - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc7... - and see what speed the processor has been running at.

Also - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc7... - same developer, this should allow you to see which apps are using the processor etc

Not sure if you need root to see the info, you definitely do to tweak any settings.
No I was trying not to get sucked back into that game (root etc), as in previous lives, it's sucked up hours of my time when I could have been doing something else!

I've got CPU Spy and BetterBatteryStats so I'll keep an eye on those, but naturally, while its behaving itself, I can't do any diags. If I get to the bottom of it I'll update the thread.

Dave, thanks for that, although I do know about all that stuff, but what I'm saying is that with me, it never ends JUST with rooting wink Always I had problems in the past with some websites not working correctly when using the Ad killer programs (don't know if its better now). The memory optimizer really shouldn't be needed with 2 Gb of RAM (it did help on older phones though). Never heard of the other program.

Dave - I see! Not too bothered about Google knowing where I've been TBQH so that wouldn't be enough reason for me to root - incidentally, I would avoid rooting your N10 if you still aren't sure about it, as Samsung / Google probably wouldn't honour the warranty - and as I found out with my Note 2, that can be expensive. frown

Incidentally, my Note 2 will be returned to me in a few days. Now I've got to decide whether to keep the N4 or the Note 2. TBH I've had a bellyfull of Samsung stuff, but the Note 2 is a very nice device.

Note II
+ Better camera
+ Better audio quality
+ Bigger screen, more colourful
+ Faster CPU/GPU
+ Much better battery life
+ Much better for storage (I bought a 64 Gb SD card, just before it died rage)
- Too big to be truly portable
- TouchJIZ
- Poor build quality
- Questionable reliabity

Nexus 4
+ Much more portable
+ Better form factor
+ Sharper screen, less susceptible to burn-in
+ Vanilla Android - Fast updates and much more polished
+ Faster real world performance
- Relatively poor battery life
- Fragile
- Limited storage.

Choices choices.... I'll probably stick with the Nexus 4 though as my trust has been eroded in Samsung stuff.

Its made of glass, too much smashing potential there, and I'm clumsy. Therefore it lives in a case so the fragile thing is a moot point I suppose.

I've had a few moments like that, I've bricked a few phones in my time as well. The Note II was the only phone that defeated me, but to be fair not a lot I could have done about supposed damage I didn't even know was there.

I've not had that one, yet, but I have been reading that a lot of folks don't actually rate Android 4.2.1 as being as stable as it could be, and I tend to agree with that point, as 4.1.2 was unflappable.

Good news is, I think 4.2.2 is in the pipeline so hopefully we will get some fixes.

Ended up doing a factory reset on mine in an attempt to try and cure this random slowdown bug I seem to have... time will tell whether it works.

It's definitely Wifi / network related it would seem as toggling airplane mode seemed to sort it (temporarily).

I also tried disabling the Currents app from background syncing as it appeared some who had the issue solved it by doing this, but it didn't work for me.

It seems that 4.2 has a good few bugs in it that need to be ironed out.

Actually, in the whole time I had my Galaxy Nexus, I never bothered rooting it, never needed to. Whereas, pretty much all my old phones otherwise were rooted.

It's a slippery slope rooting - because then I get tempted by custom ROMs, most of which usually have even more / worse foibles than the stock ROM!

No. Just put it on a flat surface with no case on. It will happily slide off on its own, like mine did and already is got a scar from whatever it was that it hit when it slid off said table. rolleyes

How's the st-st-st-st-stuttering? Did the reset solve it?
It didn't do it last night, but I wouldn't say that proves anything, because the first time I noticed it was when I had the phone for over a week.

hehe You're already destroying it, aren't you?

Maybe you should wait for the "X Phone":

It was the Galaxy Note II's fault. I had removed my Nexus from its case in order to try the SIM card in the Note, and thats when it happened.

See, bloody Samsung, I tell ya.

There's something wrong if it doesn't scroll more smoothly than any other Android phone out there, never mind an HTC Desire! (My mate still has one of these, and its extremely choppy compared to my Nexus).

Factory reset time perhaps. If not, return it. It SHOULD be extremely smooth.

The Nexus 7 does not perform as well as the Nexus 4 in use either BTW, some stutter on that was normal / to be expected IME.

I'm getting a bit disillusioned now as I'm having another problem.

This time, my google account is not connecting / syncing when on mobile data, but does fine on WiFi (the signal bars go grey). This is completely random and without me having done anything to it.

Manual sync works, as does toggling airplane mode, but this has become a daily occurrence. Annoying as I'm not getting my emails on time, which is important to me.

I've tried deleting my google account and restoring it to see what happens.

However, I have to say in the 2 weeks I've had it my opinion of this phone is going down.

1. Random stuttering which took a factory reset to fix = waste of at least an hour of my time re-setting the phone up.

2. This connection problem

3. Battery life is very poor - example, went out at 4:30pm on Saturday with 100% battery, did nothing more than play a couple of youtube videos, listened to a music for a few hours (screen on), sent a couple of texts, phone was in airplane mode overnight, and by the time 11am the next day came around I was on 8%.

4. Camera is poor. Most shots are grainy, particularly in low light. I thought my Lumia 920 was overrated - maybe not. It's true that the SGS3 and Note 2 take much better photos.

5. As evidenced by point 1 and 2, the whole thing about Vanilla being the most stable is starting to look like a (unfunny) joke.

6. Sound quality on extended listening is distinctly average at best.

I'm actually semi-considering going back to my Note 2 when it finally comes back working; Or, GASP! even buy an iPhone. I seem to have so many issues with Android over the various handsets I've had that I'm kind of sick of battling with it now.

Well I've tried that, and it hasn't helped. Looks like another factory reset - and I'm getting majorly sick of having to do this already.

Crikey, my Galaxy Nexus wasn't perfect but it was more reliable than this (GPS aside).

Slightly OT, but if I had the chance to play with both phones for a week, I don't think the N4 is worth the extra over the GNex. IMHO.

Bugger it. As someone on here already said, I may as well go for rooting, if the stock ROM is so buggy.

So I have, and I now have Cyanogen 10.1 on the way. Slippery slope begins.

Thing is I wouldn't have IF the thing had been stable out the box, but it wasn't.

I've got it on now, it has a few niceties on it, but I wouldn't have bothered just for those, hoping it'll be more stable or it'll be getting moved on.

It hasn't solved the problem, but I have gained a lot of new features and theme support, so its not all bad.

I realised my problem is my provider, who, after telling me I had "unlimited" data (when I took the contract), told me on the phone I actually had 250Mb (hardly unlimited), and that because I'd went past my FUP my apps wouldn't work, including push email.

As they also told me I had half the minutes I thought I should have, I decided to retort by asking for my PAC code. biggrin

Any suggestions for a rolling contract guys (not vodafone or EE)?
