I've got an email from O2 letting me know that my bill will going up:

At O2, we want you to have the best digital experience possible. That's why we're always investing in the best technology.
We're already making this happen. But with the current Retail Price Index (RPI) rate of inflation at 2.7%, the cost of everything is going up. As a result, we're adjusting the price of your tariff in line with RPI. This means when you get your March 2014 bill, it will be updated from £31.99 to £32.85.
You'll also see some changes to our other charges, such as for calls and texts if you go over your monthly allowance, international calls and MMS. To see what this means for you, go to o2.co.uk/prices.
I've also read this:http://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/jan/24/o2-customers-higher-prices-changed-contracts

I'm intrigued if this is new rules, how it is allowed to be applied to old contracts (such as mine). A similar thing happened a few years back and people left in droves as they changed the T&C's.

Yes, I know check my contract. But, if this is a new rule from Ofcom how can O2 pre-date it!?

Depends what the T&Cs state.

Hours after the new rules came into force, O2 announced a 2.7% price hike and a clause in its contracts under which customers will forfeit the right to walk away.
So, only NEW contracts have this in their T&C's, according to the artical. As my contract is 18 months old, it won't have the clause in it, so I can walk away?

o2 have done this before to me, it pissed me off the way it was introduced.

I didnt plan it this way, but I've just avoided the price hike by moving to Virgin on SIM only, £15/month for unltd calls, texts and data.

What the woman holding my PAC at o2 was trying to argue was for the same price I'd get 100 mins, 250meg of data and unltd texts if I stuck with o2, plus access to free wifi. Fell of me chair at that one

Industry comms said:
O2 is increasing contract prices for its existing customers by 2.7%, avoiding an Ofcom ruling made last week for new customers to be able to leave their provider mid-contract if prices rise. The mobile operator said its ruling, which is in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) from this month, takes effect from a consumer’s March bill date and applies to customers on O2 prior to January 23rd. O2 said this is in line with current terms and conditions where it states that prices may increase or decrease from time to time and that it won’t put the monthly subscription up more than once in any 12 months.

O2 is also increasing the prices of calls and text messages that are made once a customer has exceeded their inclusive allowance. Voice calls will increase from 35p a minute to 40p a minute, texts from 12p to 15p and MMS from 35p to 40p. A one minute minimum charge now also applies to calls made outside of the inclusive bundle. O2 last made changes to tariffs mid-contract last February, when it increased prices by 3.2 per cent in line with RPI.

AS I understand it.
Its simply a pre-emptive strike by the networks to cover themselves in the case of them applying a price hike above the RPI, something which I think the regulatory body has said will give customers a reason to leave. By AMENDING their T & C's they are getting round this.

Incidentally I got out of a dodgy T Mobile contract once by arguing that as they decided to charge for itemised billing where before it was free they had applied a price change that was to the power of infinity and was therefore more than the RPI.

Took me 3 letters bit I got out of it.

I was 20 months into a 24 month contract with o2 when they pulled the last scam. I told them in no uncertain terms that they should either waive the increase or I would leave, they didn't, I left. With GiffGaff now and have saved a lot of money. Thanks o2!

my wife just got the new tariff email.

10 minutes later O2 confirm there's no better tariff for her, (and it's a piss take)

15 minutes later I've got her a PAC code and ordered a GiffGaff Sim

They can't amend T&C's once a contract is started. So surely this price hike means I can get away from them. I'm fed up of having 4 bars but get st call quality from O2.

Doc: was that in contract? If so I'll get on the blower!

Surely that clause saying you can't walk away is invalid? I didn't think you could sign away your rights?

If that was the case online retailers would make it a clause in the T&Cs of using their service that you can't return items under Distance Selling Regs?

JTW - I'm not happy with that, hence the question.

Oakley - Again, this is why I posted. I want to walk away from them and leave them to stomach the rest of my line rental for treating me like st. They can't just say NO like that, surely.

My signal is appalling and, half the time, unusable - My company Orange Phone has significantly better signal and I'd actually consider switching to them if I could.

It all smacks of a corporate "fk you" to customers knowing that they (we) will have forgotten about it in a month - In advance of an OfCom ruling. The OfCom ruling is ridiculous too and should be retrospective.

Couldn't you tell them that, while the RPI might be running at +2.7% unfortunately your wages aren't, so you're going to have to reduce the amount you pay them?

Im also very interested in walking away.

My o2 contract is an 'emergency' phone that rarely gets used. Id like to tell them to stick it up their arse on principle.

The website FAQ definitely gives off a tone of 'fk you scummy customer'.

Theres no way they are getting my renewal (after almost 10yrs custom).

Arses.
I have one of those. Fiver a month with GiffGaff.

Increases hidden in small print too.

2.7% my big toe. Text messages up 14.3%, international calls (USA and Europe) up 50%!

OFCOM really are spineless.

Speaking of O2, it can't be a coincidence that my signal just drops completely whenever I'm in my GP surgery, the local walk in centre or the local hospital? They're in completely different areas yet as soon as I enter these buildings, no signal. I do however see other people using phones so I'm wondering if this is an O2 thing?
