I never thought I'd post in this section of the Pie and Piston, but here I am. I created a Flickr account in February 2011 and enjoyed it so much that I have so far uploaded 4,775 photos. However, as anyone who uses Flickr regularly knows, it all changed. Flickr went bad.

If it doesn't change back - and, let's face it, it won't - I won't be hanging around for much longer. Therefore I just came here to ask what people thought of the new Flickr but also of Ipernity, which I am considering as an alternative.

Thanks.

Why is it "bad" ? just because its different to what it was before ?

ipernity just looks like an old flickr clone without the content.

What is so terrible about it? You get a Tb of storage, which is fantastic, especially as you can upload full quality. The only thing that annoys me about flickr is their lack of an ipad app. Annoying. Hate using iphone apps zoomed out.

I suppose it's a matte of opinion as to whether or not one likes the new Flickr layout. Personally, I think it's unattractive, confusing and it has also become terribly slow. Flickr seems to have become much less word-friendly (this is especially apparent in the sets) which does make me feel somewhat patronised, like reading is too hard for me and I only want to look at big, colourful pictures.

As a pro user I also feel somewhat insulted because Flickr has just decided to do away with pro memberships. This would be fine if we were to be offered a refund but we haven't been. Fortunately my membership runs out in a few weeks. Seeing as we are the people who give money to Flickr it might I've been nice of them to ask if we wanted it to change, but that was beyond them.

The thing that really gets me is that they asked us what we thought, we all said it's ste and they don't bother to respond. Ideally they would have change it back, but I knew the wouldn't. They could have responded at the very least, even if it wasn't an apology. It's pretty obvious that Flickr are only interested in the money they can now get from advertisers.

In short, I think the new design is ste and I don't like the way I've been treated.

New Flickr is a big and much needed improvement over the old. Used it today and it's brilliant. Much easier and quicker to use.

TheHeretic - thanks for the link.

A number of my contacts have already moved it Ipertiny so I think I might go that way. I'll hang on to my Flickr account for a bit longer, though. It might grow on me.

Wait, so the photo site that you now don't like has pushed pictures to the forefront of the UI and you complain that they've become "less word friendly" then say you want to see big colourful photos.. which is it ?
If its the latter note that if you click on any picture it will display (as default) far bigger than it used to, in fact it pretty much fills the screen. The old design however made the picture small, added a fairly large header across the top, and then a pretty wide column down the right.
So, if you want to see big photos surely the new design is better ?

Pro accounts have not been "done away with" you can keep your pro account, exactly how it is at the same price. They didn't have to do that.
If you really do want a refund you can get one. The problem with asking users opinion is that you get nowhere, look at all the drama and panic thats going on, imagine if they had asked "what do you think guys?" you'd never get to implement any changes because you won't please everyone. What are they meant to do if they get a 50/50 response ?
Before this I saw lots of complaints about Flickr being "left behind" and stale because it hadn't changed in a long time. Now it has changed there are people complaining that it did change - how do you resolve the issue ?

This isn't a democracy, its a frigging website. Do you get upset when the label on a tin of baked beans changes at the supermarket ? maybe you should ask for a vote on that too ?

If the new design is "ste", how come it achieves your primary aim of looking at big pictures whereas the old one didn't ? Doesn't make sense.

I don't see how anyone has been treated badly ? you get to keep your pro account (that is now not available to new users) and get a better deal than the $50 a year accounts. Whats wrong with that ?

You can downgrade to free, still upload 1Tb of photos and use the site - would that be treating you badly too ?

Not having a go but (like many) I've read your post just screams "I don't like change! because its err, different!"

Just to let you know, if you're currently a pro member, you can keep it forever, and its benefits are far greater than either of the new pay models, even the $500 a year one.

I do not only want to look at big colourful pictures. I said I was treated like that's what I wanted.

Yes, I can keep my pro membership but it's basically the same as a normal membership. All I get as a pro member is stats and no ads. I see I can get a refund now, so I'll take that back.

If Flickr put the matter to vote then and received a 50/50 response then they should give users the option of using the old site or changing to the new one. They could even offer a two day trial of the new one.

Two other people have contributed to this thread and neither have suggested that.

The new "endless scroll" on Flickr simply does not work and they do not seem to care. Every other photo site that has scrolling also has pages but on Flickr it's just one endless scroll which bogs down very quickly. It's like trying to view a site from 15 years ago...slooooowwwww and I find myself quickly moving on to other photo sites. Flickr was the best and it has become the worst
