Out of interest has anyone got any experience of the new internet browser called Firefox?

It seems to be hitting the news today and is being positioned as a real rival to Microsoft.

It's not really new - many people on here have been using it for a very long time, me included. Aside from a very few sites demanding IE, it works very well indeed. Get the mouse gestures extension....

Still using 0.6.1

downloading 1.0 as I speak. Already installed it at work, where I don't need admin rights to execute the zipped version from the directory where I decompressed it As said, have a look at the extensions available! Some good stuff there.

I'm on 0.9.2 and it is very good. Tabbed pages and mouse gestures - how did I get along without them?

I'm using version 1 preview release with which I've encountered a few bugs (which is to be expected). I'll move to the final version when it's ready.

However, I use Netscape which is similar with the excellent tab feature.

I have been using Firefox quite a while, and am using the version 1.0 Preview Release right now.

Nothing but good things to say about it. Stable, fast, secure, compatible and easy to use. Not necessarily adjectives you would associate with MSIE

If I move over to Firefox from IE6 will it be very different or an easy transition?

Very easy - there's no reason you can't run both side by side. You can import your bookmarks too. In fact, for some sites, you must still use IE6 (I can think of a few which demand it - some airline booking sites, for instance).

You'll just have more features (if you want). You don't give up IE, it's still on your machine, and can be made the default browser everytime.

Something to try is tabbed browsing:

scroll through PH's What's New > Last Visit list with Firefox, and open threads that you want to read in tabs in the background by clicking the mouse wheel, middle mouse button or [Ctrl]+[left mouse button] on the link. Pages will load in the background while you're still scrolling through the list.
Then simply go through the tabs to read the selected threads.

This works very well with all link lists like Google search results or ebay categories too!

Anyone got a link for the mouse gestures extension? I can't get at the mozilla site - for some reason, it seems to be rather busy...

Thanks,
Chris

We just downloaded and tried the thing - our app is IE based so we wanted to see if it was any good.

Errr - what's the fuss about? Its a browser. It has tabs. Big deal - I can do that with IE and the taskbar - XP even groups 'em up for me!

The Scripting Language seems to missing most of the cool features of IE - and wasn't compatible with our code (OK we use Microsoft extensions so its not surprising).

It doesn't support ActiveX applets - the most powerful and useful applet form - if somewhat insecure.

Firefox has a slow rendering engine in comparison ti IE.

It blocks popups? Err so does IE.

Firefox is free. IE is free.

I guess there will always be those who want an alternative - and it seems perfectly good for browsing web-sites but I'm afraid I just don't see what's so good about it? Netscape with knobs on!

So go back to IE, yes firefox struggles closing some java applets, some sites don't recognise it, but on the whole it runs quicker than IE and isn't full of holes and more to the point it isn't bl00dy microsoft.
