Online Gallery Software?
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I put up a post on here a while back about online gallery software, and most people pointed me in the direction of this one:
http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=Gallery%20Requirements
Sadly, that one needs requires PHP 4.x, and the host I am moving to uses a more stable, earlier version of PHP.
Does anyone know of a similar Gallery package that will work with the earlier version of PHP?
DocEvil - you sent me some very scary emails about your own gallery software - will that work on PHP <4.x ?
Thanks guys,
Dave

I'm not sure if my software will work to be honest as while as I use nothing particulary clever, I never really tested it throughly on older installs of PHP/mySQL - I had no need to. I'm not even sure how to test it other than chucking it online and seeing (I'm still learning PHP if the truth be told).
I'm intrigued as to why you are been told version 4.x isn't stable
Either laziness or an important user who doesn't want to change? Strange indeed!

The software I used was called Jalbum 4.4. Which you can get my following the link at the bottom of the page or via www.download.com
It allows you to choose various skins etc.

Jamie - I kinda thought you were my host? Im sure I sent you a mail about hosting and someone called Paul replied from your Sales department. Or maybe i've got completely confused!!
re JAlbum - How does that work? Is it a case of just uploading each image one at a time through a control panel and the software sorts out thumbnails and links etc? If so, that maybe what im after if I can modify the template.
Docevil - Do you have a link to your gallery pages mate? I lost the link you gave me last time!
Cheers

jAlbum builds the website offline and you upload the directories using FTP - not to dissimilar to my stuff.
My gallery is at www.stefancarlton.net/pictures.php?menu=picture the software is only available as email at the moment
And my software works fine with Register1
No issues at all, bar some weird connection problem at the start due to my then bad programming.

So with both Jalbum and yours, you have to create the thumbnail images yourself and upload with FTP? Hmm, maybe not quite what im after. I really want to just be able to upload via a control panel, then I can just upload from work!
TepidDave! How are you?
With JAlbum you do the following:
1. Choose a folder with the pics you want to upload (eg. "My Pictures")
2. Choose an output folder (Or create a new one)
3. Choose what "skin" you want to choose.
4. The software then creates all the thumbnails, web pages etc and saves them to the output folder you created.
5. You then simply upload the whole folder via FTP to your website.
Easy Peasy! Does take a while to upload depending on which skin you use. eg. I had to upload the full size photo, preview photo (smaller) and the thumbnail.
You can choose the layout of the page. Eg. 4 thumbnails across x 3 deep etc. IIRC you can choose what size the thumbnail it creates is as well

cunningly since he uses it, that's exactly how JAlbum works. Mine is a little more involved as you need to create smaller versions of the images and upload those and the display pics online...
If you start looking for a program which will resize them on the web, you'll find that most don't and use the height & width properties of the <img> tag to display images - something you don't want to do.
Mine exists as JAlbum/Catalog wizard wouldn't intergrate tightly with my layout and I wanted to write something. http://drhunter.brinkster.net/index.html is another JAlbum skin.

Ah, so its a thumbnailer, rather than gallery software. I already have some thumbnailer software, although it must be said that it doesnt output pages that look as nice as some of the JAlbum ones.
Oh, and when are you back in Bournemouth mate?
Click on one of the thumbnails mate and then press the play button and it scrolls through each of the pictures in a preview/presentation mode.
Should be back in Bournemouth after xmas for the weekend, then back in September for my final year!

Nope, no Paul works for me :|
We run PHP 4.3.4 on our VDS Machines, and all Client Dedicated machines run whatever versions they like :|
Not me I am afraid!
