Alternatives? Are there any anywhere near as good?

For educational and research purposes of course.

www.torrentsearch.us
www.demonoid.com
www.torrentspy.com

Not that I'm saying any of these are still working since the last time I tried them, if I ever did of course.

I suspect that they were threatened with legal action. There's a (brief) story in The Register about it.

Did you hear about the 12 year old girl the RIAA sued for sharing files on.. kazaa or something? Fined $12,000, and her parents had to pay, if I recall correctly.

Whatever, I'm just not buying any music until they come up with something worth paying for. CDs were worth paying for, but the technology is now 3 years out of date. iTunes is not worth paying for. The EU have raised a lawsuit (or something) against them for the restrictive practice of not allowing Brits to purchase a song from, say, itunes France, where it's cheaper.

Are we better off copying a CD, then posting a tenner to "Chris Martin of Coldplay" at his home address?

Do the record companies deserve to have loads of money, just to make every single radio station play their latest crappy talentless pop over, and over, 14 times a day?

That girl was hosting a direct connect hub and was distributing thousands of tracks. Doesnt make it any less sadistic.

I paraphraze this from the fark thread, RIAA and MPAA are just pissed off that people are telling them what they want instead of them telling people what they want.

At least they wont have to worry about the filesharing that doesnt happen at LAN parties

Is this like the shareprovider.com that was gone forever, thats now back?

SoulSeek is way better for music anyway.

Just a point that may be of interest.

CD Album's are wholesaled to record shops for £6.50

Of this £6.50, £5.50 goes to the record company and £1 to the artist.

I would happily start buying CD's again if they were sold direct from the record companies, thus maintaining their margin for the £6.50 they already get.

I would also happily pay £1 per album direct to the artists for download.

I'd happily pay a tenner to the artist if the album was worth having - still someone's got to pay for the studio time and engineers - a bill normally footed by the record company.

True, but I am not giving them that choice.

Full artwork and engineered - £6.50

Off the mixer - £1

Its the realism aspect, dah-ling

bringing back the past here but...

People say they think CD's are too expensive, amd maybe they are, but if something is too expensive I dont have it. I would like a TVR and I think they are too expensive, using the logic of most people, pherhaps I should steal one? The way a market works is that those that can afford something have it, those that dont, dont.

Not having a go at anyone, I am downloading at I type (entirely legally of course ) but I am not going to try and justify it.

The difference being there is no material object to steal.

If you steal someone's car, you deprive them of the use of it.

If you download music (especially stuff you would normally never buy) then you are copying it and the original remains.

Two interseting news items late last year
i) record sales up 8%
ii) cinema visits up 15%
all since Kazza, torrents and the like so they are really damaging the market.
I personally buy more music now than I have ever done before, generally due to downloading the odd track from the same band.

No. I've never been one for buying loads of CDs or DVDs even before I got broadband.

In terms of software, the only 2 things I would buy if not readily downloadable would be WinXP and Ms Office, everything else I would do without.

I don't think he is kidding himself. I bought about 4 albums a year before I had the internet. Now I buy about 5 but download a lot of music.

The same goes for DVD movies. There are movies I wouldn't have paid to watch but I will watch them for free! I paid to watch 6 movies last year...

I only actually own one original album, I just don't want to buy CDs, it seems like rubbish value, I'll only listen to it a couple of times so it's a total waste.

In terms of DVDs, the car ones gets watched lots, the comedy ones get watched lots. I'll watch a film maybe twice, for the cost of them, it's pointless.
