Hi all
Mrs PR has decided she wants a tablet ipad thingy.
We have a laptop for most stuff, so she'll use it for photos, social media, surfing, shopping, holidays etc.
What would you recommend? I'd rather not spend loads on features we won't use. Camera is important and it'll be used as photo album as much as anything else.

iPad or Nexus 9 would be my choices.
Cameras suck on tablets, the one on your phone is almost certainly better quality (and you don't look like a complete tool while taking the photos).
There are a variety of ways to sync the photos automatically to your tablet if that is where you prefer to view them

I've got a nexus 7 2013 which has been great to take out and about but is a bit small. For a larger tablet for home (and to partially replace my laptop) I've recently bought a Samsung note 12.2, which is a fabulous piece of kit and has the added bonus of the wacom digitiser and stylus. Got my note 12.2 for £324 from John Lewis.
I have to say, i have just bought an iPad Air 2 and it is a wonderful piece of tech.
We got the 'entry' level at £399, although if you can hold out for a while, keep an eye on the Apple refurb store where you can save a few quid..

This is coming from an IPad Air 2 owner!
iPad Air 2 this is coming from an iPad Air 2 owner and user of android tablets for work. This is coming from an IPad Air 2 owner!
iOS doesn't do anything better than Android. Android doesn't do anything better than iOS.
I own/use a variety of devices - Android, iOS, WP, BB, Windows (8.1 and 10). Personal preference would be for the flexibility of a MS Surface Pro - makes the iPad look like a childs toy on every appreciable level.
Have an old iPad 2 which is good so I suspect current iteration in better.
Loved Nexus 7 but it died and replaced with Nexus 9 which just isn't right. Can't really explain why - it's just not in the same league as the N7 was in its day.
Despite being an Android fan (love my Nexus 5 phone) were I to buy a tablet again now I'd probably stump up for the apple option.

I do some developing on these, and have a couple of kids (and a wife!). We have a number of tablets in the house, And ipad2, nexus 7, Air 2 and others.. The Apple Air 2 is by far the best, the kids and wife just use it with ease.. It just works with zero messing about.. The wife will not use the nexus or the likes, she likes the simpleness of the apple devices.
Say what you like about apple, but the UI is just fantastically designed for something that covers all ages and abilities.

My mum (67) figured out Android in about a minute. My 6 year old happily started using each different environment in about the same - that has included Android, iOS, Windows Phone, BB OS (Playbook) and Windows 8.1 (on a tablet).Say what you like about apple, but the UI is just fantastically designed for something that covers all ages and abilities.
The UI is barely any different between Android and iOS. Both are easy to use for anyone. Android "just works" easily as well as iOS. Any perceived differences are down to personal preference.
... which leaves the choice down to cost.
I think the problem with comparing Android and iPad is that someone could take a premium product and then experience some dodgy £30 Chinese android ebay special cobbled together by an orphan with one finger and then criticise the entire Android range.
