Check out www.apple.com

Though still more expensive than a similar spec pc once the monitor, keyboard, etc have been added, it looks like a good way to get into the world of Apple.

And its so tiny!

I'd still use my PC for web development, but could use the mini mac as a media centre / web browser.

Am very tempted. The new alloy wheels for the TVR might have to be put on hold

I'm hankering after a Mac at the minute and whilst a G5 dual processor with a 22 cinema screen is on the wish list, it ain't gonna happen!

It's a respectable G4 1.4ghz too.

Here's a noddy question (slightly ott). Can you use a PC formatted iPod with a Mac (ie currently I use iTunes on both my home and work PC's to upload new tunes to my iPod), can you do the same with a PC and Mac (obviously the Mac is a different format) or will I have to bin the PC format and reformat the iPod to Mac format and thus loose the ability to upload tunes onto it from work.

I'm very tempted as I only really use my home PC for Office 2000 and PS7 (win2k OS). All my dev work I do on my RedHat and Solaris servers. Also given the value the old PC's, I'll end up retaining it as a standby.

I dunno about the ipod query but the above is exactly why i changed. I can do all my Office, Photoshop etc work on the Mac, but have the added benefits the OSX brings (reliability a big bonus). It's never properly crashed in nearly 2 years of use. I know others have similar love for their Windows, but i'm more than happy with my OSX.

I'm not sure if this is fully answering your question, but as far as I'm aware you cannot inter-swap between the different platforms without formatting the iPod on each occasion.

The iPod can be formatted to work with either OS X or Windows, but not both at the same time.

Ya know, I'm after a new PVR... if it came with PVRy type stuff (svideo out & in) this thing would be a dream for me.

Wonder if there are any mac compatible external hardware dooberies to do that...

How do Apple do it?

Just like the iPod I have no real need for one of these but I want one, badly.

Easy.

Form and function.

PCs tend to offer one, not both.

Astounding really, considering that their design guru used to design urinals for Armitage Shanks.

Nice but not that much of a bargain once you spec it up to a decent level.
I'll keep hold of my G4 iMac for the time being...

Realy?, Ah, that would explain the use of white and chrome then!

Good point, I tried that last night when jsr posted the link, and a similarly spec'd G5 would cost about £200 extra, not much in a grand scale of things. Is there a huge different between the G4 and G5 processors.

Given that I'd be using it primarily for web-surfing, Office (need compatibility), PS7 and iTunes. Would 256mb memory be enough? (given that I currently do the above on Compaq Deskpro PIII 400 with 384mb, this probably isn't an issue)...

What's the equivelent spec pc in terms of processor and memory for the base model of mac mini (1.25Ghz and 256Mb)?

Can you network a mac mini to a pc and transfer files, share drives, network print?

Can you hook a mac up to an adsl router to access the internet?

1. Dunno.
2. Yes you can.
3. Yes you can.

With the exception of the OS, MAC's these days have the same connection plugs as "IBM compatibles"
