Problem with Internet explorer.

My mate has just given me his computer to try and fix.
He couldn't get onto the internet, either through AOL or BT open world. I've managed to get a connection to BT by uninstalling one of the protocols in the same list as TCP/IP.
When I put the browser up all I get is a page called about:blank. I can't get any website or anything just error 404 with about:blank. It doesn't matter how many times I cahnge the homepage in internet options, still goes back to this. BTW he's using an external modem,
Any ideas?
