Broadband Suppliers

It looks likely that we'll be moving house shortly, and I'd like some feedback on Broadband Suppliers. We're with NTL at the moment, for BB, Phone and TV, and the bill is about £46/month (we hardly use the phone at all, maybe 8-10 calls a month). It's unlikely that we'll be staying with them, the house has a BT phoneline but no BB, but is in a BB supplied area.
Had Sky at a previous abode, but threw them out as the rates kept increasing with no corresponding increase in either service or programmes. I got pee'd off with the 5p connection charge that BT had, everytime the pooter lost connection it was a 5p charge, made up 85% of the bill for one quarter!
I open the post to the floor.

i'm very happy with wanadoo - very reliable and pretty cheap.
I have just taken up the force9.net 2mbs service for £14.99 a month. I have had force9 for last year, great srvice, rarely busy and service has been uninterupted as far as I can see for all but one short period in 12 months. I don't download much so the 1mb limit is fine and I can buy more for £1.50p a meg. Iwas paying £19.99 for the 512k service.
As for landlines, just sit tight. You'll get a call from India at an inconvenient time offering you something fantasic.

If you can deal with minimal support etc (i.e you're relatively tech-savvy) then www.eclipse.co.uk are good. Prices are good, contention rations are good and you get a static IP which you can't get on most other providers.

At work we use force9 and at home I use Nildram. Both much better than others I've had the misfortune to experiance. Nildram seems to be up just a tiny bit more than force9...
asking people in the GG forum for advice on which Broadband supplier to use is like going to a Bakers and asking advice on how to build a wall... He might know how to do, but he's not an "expert" and his solution won't be the best (by a long way 
).
If you look in the computers and stuff forum there is a multitude of posts regarding the subject, but the best advice I could give anyone is to run away from the major suppliers such as AOL, Wanadoo, NTL, BT... they don't seem to care about the customers to much
Try MetroNet, Pipex, Eclipse or UKOnline - much better companies who have decent pricing structures and don't try and advertise to the lowest common denominator!

The vast majority of the people who post in C&S are active in GG as well so in actuality you are going to get a pertinent lucid response in either place.
This is not ignoring the fact though that posts pertaining to computers should be in C&S by default.
Also with the exception of UKOnline's 8mb service all DSL is wholesaled by BT Ignite so everyone has the same product with a different badge...

I think Pipex is a major supplier, you'll find. Except that they're pretty damn good at it because thats their core business.

Fabulous post though, you diss some of the techies on here and yet proffer your own opinion. Well done.
Not dissing anyone, just saying it like it is - asking in P&P is going to get suggestions from everyone and potentially miss out some of the techies who stay away from here... Asking the masses for opinions on a company is fine, but you will always end up choosing the company most are with/recommend, which might not be the best.
But most importantly, aren't all our opinions usually made up from the experience of others

Same connection service, different customer service - I can't get any help from BT as the call centres don't speak English... Much better to stick to companies who actually care about the customer IMO not the bottom figure (if they actually exist
When do you actually need to speak to customer service though? I never have in 4 years of DSL use.
Thats where the margin is...
Mind you at £9/month wholesale uncapped its not like they need much more margin...

It's not the same product though is it. Each individual suppliers has their servers at the other end of the BT connection. If those servers are always down or having problems then it affects the product. On top of that you have the quality of support staff. Yes if BT has a problem in an exchange all the suppiers will be affected. But that doesn't make them all the same product...

Its all over BT wire and kit, its BT product with slightly differing faces.
Only if your ISP has gone LLU is this any different really.
OK yes if BT's hub go's down then everybody regardless of their supplier looses their connection.
However using force9 we hardly ever have any down time, and if we do it's well explained. When paying BT for a connection it was up and down like a whores knickers.....
So yes their is a hell of a difference between suppliers. Some are good and keep THEIR servers working. Others dont care so long as you keep paying.
