DC++ from http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/
Takes a bit of time to setup and get used to but IME far better than anything I've used, totally spyware etc free.

My son kindly installed Kazza on my XP machine, and I have been plagued with pop-ups and adds ever since.
Also Mcafee found shed-loads of adware in a couple of folders that it linked to a virus.
I finally managed to remove all related progs, but now I am wondering if there's a safe and clutter-free product that he can install (even if we have to buy it!) as I really don't want ads or other nasties popping up.

*Taps microphone* This thing on?
Azureus ( azureus.sourceforge.net )
and Emule ( www.emule-project.net )
If you want a Kazaa network program, try Kazaa Lite, it's had all the nasty spyware stuff stripped out. Be careful though, Kazaa has taken over a lot of the old Kazaa Lite distribution sites and makes you download their version instead.
Its *really* not advisable to run any file sharing prog without good antivirus, active firewall and malware filters.

Thanks Mike, I do have McAfee running, which seems to work ok. I also have WinXP firewall active, and a firewall in my router.
I was just victim to what I think was adware that McAfee seemed to think was a virus, or at least 'unwanted programs' (they're certainly right about that bit!).
I think I'll try emule, as I have seen it mentioned elsewhere - and I don't mind paying a bit for the thing (IIRC emule charges a fee for it's support) as long as it works and doesn't give me ads etc,.
