email gadget question

Does anyone know of any decent hand-held gadgets that will enable me to pick up emails anywhere in the world. Including opening attachments (Word, Excel, etc)?

Two part answer:
1) The device. Almost certainly a Pocket PC device, although if you just want to read through the Office attachments, a SmartPhone type thing would do.
2) A means of connecting to the Internet. A SMartPhone, or XDA type thing will come with connectivity built in, and you need to chat to the service provider to get the settings for whichever country you are in. A normal PPC will need a phone with IR/Bluetooth/a cable connectivity.
My Vodafone used GPRS from Spain with no alteration in settings

T-Mobile MDAIII worked for me in North Africa no probs (well maybe not) email, messenger GPRS etc. Bloody awful design though, get something from Nokia if possible.

Try a Nokia 9300.


I don't know how wide your 'anywhere in the world' requirement is, but in common with all other European and North American mobile phones this won't work in Japan....

I have a Sony Ericsson V800 and a Toshiba E800 Pocket Pc connected by Bluetooth and they work a treat. The Pocket PC has a VGA screen which is ideal for Excel and the V800 is 3G so if the network supports it, you get much faster data rates. I am with Vodafone so I can get good coverage pretty much anywhere in the world.

well l'm writing this from my new 'xda 11s' palm top 'thingie' - it's brilliant. it cost me 135 quid plus forty quid per month.

the only thing i'm not sure about is whether 36 megabytes data transfer per moth [i think] is enough. i don't know what the hell a megabyte represents. so, does 36 per month seem reasonable for surfiing the web and reading 200 emails.

36mb is tons, unless you're downloading massive emails daily, you shouldnt run into much issue

most emails are 2-5k, so at 5k, thats 200 a day before you hit 1mb

My wife wishes she had one in preference to her work issued Blackberry.
